614753 2007-11-24 19:13:00 It's a rumbling hush-hush secret spoken in semi-private circles that is making the rounds with people who don't txtmsg .

I'm afraid the US is in for some severe times and very soon .

There's never been a real famine here . . but I bet it's coming . To the fact that everything we get in our hands and mouths arrives by diesel truck and/or diesel train, the current fuel crisis is likely to be the catalyst of the next wave of hunger and strife . . but this time not in Bangladesh or Peru .

There will be rolling effects all over the world . . . and . NZ is not exempt .

BLOG LINK HERE ( . plim . org/01%20usa_dollar_devalua . htm" target="_blank">www . plim . org) (not mine)

I know the blog's old, but it's also just hovering in truth to the thing that has to happen .

Mexico, Canada and the US have had talks about the new "Continental Dollar" (Ç) to compete with the Euro (€) and unite the whole North American continent into a force with which to be reckoned . Fat chance!

To quote Pogo (Walt Kelley's character): "We have met the enemy and he is us . "

614754 2007-11-24 19:23:00 Nothing .

I dont buy online .

And I have nothing / dont deal in anything that involves US $ or AU $ .

Fuel, I dont drive, so I'm not worried what the price of petrol or diesel is .

Or what it goes to .

Gee . . . that's so totally wrong on oh-so-many levels!

Do you eat? Use anything that's imported? Use electronics? Listen to/watch any media at all? Wear clothing? How about shoes? Beer? Wine? Pepsi®/Coke®? Medicine? Toothpaste? Deodorant?

How about electricity? You can't have a toaster without electricity . Microwaves won't work on good wishes and mental telepathy .

Everything's getting a big hit in cost of creation and even bigger, cost of promulgation .

It's not just online stuff and buying things from the US . . . right now I feel the US is the place to watch to see where the rest of the world's woes are gonna come from in the form of cost escalations and ultimately in transportation .

Yeah . . you CAN make everything yourself . . carve some silverware outta tree branches and bowels and plates with your own clay or use a disposable leaf .

Unless you have a cottage industry of your own that makes everything you consume, you ARE involved and are gonna get badly upbraided if you play ostrich with what you believe .

We're talking about your own iron-ore smelters, forges, rubber trees and large plots of land for crops, trees, lumber yard and blacksmithing .

Don't forget to have a barn and hayloft for your beasts of burden too . Yes . . . you'll also need a brace of mules or a pair of horses or maybe if you like a couple of water buffalo .

Good idea to propagate your own chickens, pigs, cows and sheep . . but that may not be a problem .

Realistically, you are a consumer and should be thinking along these lines instead of shelling up and saying you use things that don't count . You are not part of an aboriginal race, are you?

Maybe you can go bush for a few weeks or a month or so, but I bet you'll scurry back to things electronic and warm and comfortable really fast .

Subsistence living is OK for bush people . . but somehow (by your using the internet here) I believe you aren't ready to make that sortta sacrifice .

614756 2007-11-24 20:03:00 [U]You are not part of an aboriginal race, are you?

No I'm not. I'm Maori, which isnt aboriginal. BUT, if I were so..

I could go bush or live in a haybarn, but you dont get either of these in Auckland.

Everyone else uses power etc. So whats your point?

The US does nothing for me, so why should I care about their $

614757 2007-11-24 20:03:00 Yes I am worried about it, it seems to be in a free fall, they are probably letting it fall to make their exports more competitive to try to reverse their huge balance of payments deficit.

But there are signs that many countries are going away from using the US dollar as a trading currency.

But I am more concerned about the coming recession / depression in the States caused by the housing crisis. This is very bad as it will depress the building industry and therefore lots of other supply industries and will make Americans feel less rich. (eg they are already buying less of our timber products)

I think that people like those banks that encouraged lending and the Federal Reserve bank (Greenpsan) that let that type of lending go on for years which I think has encouraged a housing "boom" in the UK, Australia and here that are really based on nothing.

You should only have a housing boom if your population is growing rapidly.

And yes we all depend on the price of oil whether we drive or not, freight and manufactured goods all use oil in one way or another.

614758 2007-11-24 20:09:00 $1 US is currently worth $1.31 NZ
It will make stuff imported from the US a lot cheaper but will make it more expensive for the US to buy imported stuff from us.

614759 2007-11-24 20:29:00 What Does the USA Dollar Devaluation Mean to You?Not much. Although my missus (probably soon to be ex) will be visiting her dad in the US next year so it'll save her a bit of money. Greg (193)
614760 2007-11-24 20:35:00 No I'm not. I'm Maori, which isnt aboriginal. BUT, if I were so..
I think Joe was referring to the other meaning of the word - aboriginal also means native or indigenous, not just a native of Australia. So being Māori you could be fairly referred to as aboriginal to New Zealand.

614761 2007-11-24 20:41:00 Well true I guess. Speedy Gonzales (78)
614762 2007-11-24 20:42:00 A really big problem is the amount of US greenbacks that China has. If they cash them in, this place is bankrupt.

As the most indebted nation, the US will die a lingering death if these balances cannot get back to somewhat normal values. I don't see that happening.

The cost of oil is sucking us dry right now..even though the US govt is singularly responsible for putting those oil Sheiks and Lords into power in the first place. Does Saudi Arabia ring any bells?

Now with the bait-n-switch war going on there and the original and maybe noble reason for it gone, all that JB is doing is making the sand lords angry.

Saddam's gone: get out.

I very seriously expect many huge and bad things to happen here soon.

Iraq has stated that they WILL advance their nuclear weapons program and Russia told JB to get his nose out of the affair.

The US starts it's presidential primaries in about 5 or 6 weeks, and although they portend nothing, there is an air of shift in the rank and file and I suspect that JB wants another 4 years..but that requires some fancy legal and jurisprudent maneuvering.

This will affect youse guys too....slower no doubt, but dropping into a pit has the same results if you fall rapidly or slowly, seeing all the details or blindly dropping.

There are families here working everyone in it who is eligible TO work, having one or two of them just working for gas money so the other big-earners can get to and from work. Kewl..huh!
