777064 2009-05-26 18:32:00 I just signed up with Orcon a few weeks ago. However, so far my speed has been seriously slow. I'm on the Orcon@home Purple plan, with max/max speed.

However so far I've been lucky to get downloads going faster than 20kb/s. Lately it doesn't even go faster than 6.6kb/s, even from NZ sites. There have been moments where I have gotten normal/fast speed, but it never lasts longer than an hour or so.
I took a speed test, and this is what I got. Dead of night, at 1am:

I'll do another test in the morning and see what I get.

EDIT: Just tried speedtest.net:

Anyone else have similar issues? Any help/tips would be awesome.

777066 2009-05-26 19:22:00 Have you tried resting your router (if you have one)? I have heard this can make a difference :) davidmmac (4619)
777067 2009-05-26 19:35:00 How far are you from your exchange? gary67 (56)

Yes, a number of times. I have two ADSL modems that I use.

How far are you from your exchange?

Wouldn't have a clue, to be honest. But I don't think I should be getting barely above dial-up speeds, no-matter where it is.

777069 2009-05-26 22:18:00 Who was your previous ISP? How was the speed compared to Orcon? bk T (215)
777070 2009-05-26 22:25:00 I have two ADSL modems that I use. What do you mean by this, are they pluged in at the same time or do you swap them over from time to time. Rob99 (151)
777071 2009-05-26 23:15:00 There is a serious problem somewhere, unless you're really on the outer reach of what ADSL can reach. Check in your router for actual line speeds, and have you called orcon about it? Did you have an ISP previously delivering ADSL on the line? Were the speeds better? If not, theres a possibility the line has a problem somewhere.

Check the following -

Are there line filters on all the used jackpoints in the house?

Are you only using one modem/router on the line? (You CANNOT use 2 on the same line simeltaneously.)

Unplug everything in the house attached to a phone line, reboot the modem and check if the line speed improves. Also use a different line filter.

It's not a lot of good doing speedtests to check speed difference as they are never exactly the same twice. You need to find in your modem where the line speed info is and use that for testing.

If none of that improves, call Orcon, let them know what you've done and they ought to be able to send someone to check the line, or at least give you an answer as to why this is happening. Orcon's standard of customer support is a lot higher than most of the other NZ ISPs, just be thankful you didn't get this problem with Vodafone. :)

777072 2009-05-26 23:44:00 make sure none of your ethernet cords are running parallel to & right next to any power cords Nictech (14748)
777073 2009-05-27 11:35:00 Sorry for the confusion, when I say I have two ADSL modems, I mean I switch them around occasionally.

And to answer Wratterus, yes I have line filters on all the used jacks. (Three - One for the ADSL modem, one for Sky and one for the phone.)

I've tried unplugging everything from the phone-jacks except the modem at various times in the day, no improvement. I haven't tried a new line filter, but I've switched them around to different phone-jacks.

Guess I better start nagging at Orcon D:
