777358 2009-05-27 11:18:00 Our northland valley has no broadband coverage - whats a good petition to write up and get everybody to sign? We would like the option to have it if it was available. And who would I send it too?
And help would be appreaciated.

777359 2009-05-27 11:28:00 Have you tried satellite ISPs?

Is this for the school?

I am not sure how many people reside in Honeymoon Valley but maybe the population is on an exploding basis.

777360 2009-05-27 21:16:00 I live in a rural valley too. We have broadband, but we are not far from a "cabinet".
A few years ago Telecom stated they had no immediate plans to upgrade our area, but broadband was a possibility, sometime in the future.
Anyway, a young guy working on a farm in the area, was an online gamer, so broadband was pretty essential for him.
He got off his butt, organised a petition, (which also stated that those who signed would be definitely interested in signing up for the service - this is necessary so Telecom can see that it is potentially economically viable) and visited every household in the district - about 40, I think.
A few months later we all received correspondence to say we could go with the sevice as upgrade work in the cabinet had been done.
Maybe there are some technical limitations in your area, but if not, you could use the above as a model?
I personally don't see satellite or wireless (at this stage) as being a satisfactory alternative - too costly and too slow - better than dial up, but in the first instance I'd aim for service over the phone lines.

777361 2009-05-27 21:21:00 Lucky you jcr1.

Whereas in Wyndham a massive fuss was made about the lack of both broadband and cellphone coverage in outlying areas including most of the Catlins, Telecom reps came down, Vodafone reps came down, the hall was filled, people filled out forms, etc etc.

They both said no too small, tough luck.
And thats how its stayed.

What you need is a high profile-professional-stink-kikker-upper living in the area.

777363 2009-05-28 07:38:00 Did you watch close up about a week or two ago?

There were some farmers who got sick of dial up, and contacted an ISP. The farmer laid the cables, and the ISP put in a cabinet (I think) in one of the farmers sheds, they now all have broadband :).

See if you can get a few people interested, then contact an ISP saying theirs a bunch of you who want broadband.

Like the person from the ISP on close up said, be proactive .

Good Luck! :)

777366 2009-05-28 09:43:00 So in the latest budget how much is going to be spent on Broadband as opposed to the 1.5 billion actually promised?

Must have a close look and check.

As expected reality differs:-

The promise was $1.5bill over the next 10 years or so - therefore they won't be spending it all at once!

This quote might be of interst to zefirebird:

The $48 million for rural broadband is in addition to the $1.5 billion already announced for fibre to the home.
