617268 2007-12-02 19:43:00 I see that Cue TV is available now on Freeview.

Yes, picking up Cue on MediaPortal now no problem.

Seemingly I am supposed to be able to get this one also, but so far not, even on manual scan.

Yea I've tried that as well but can't pick it up. Might need a slightly bigger dish perhaps.

We are getting it fine.

Was talking to the Freeview guy today.

He said that digital bigger dish just means less rainfade or even no rainfade, for a 120cm dish

It is supposed to be another way to go for digital TV incl all Freeview & a lot cheaper. Although I don't see any pricing on the sites.

As we are all having to buy NEW equipment to get Freeveiw, we still have to
buy the older spec gear for some reason.
NZ are getting DVB-S, not the later standard, DVB-S2

From the wiki
"The conversion process from DVB-S to DVB-S2 is expected to take about 15 years -- probably in sync with the coming of HDTV.... "
"The typical lifetime of a Direct to Home Set Top Box is about 5 years, with most lasting 7 years or more. Therefore it is to be expected that the conversion process to DVB-S2 should take about 10 years as a baseline estimate"

So why not use the Newer standard now, a big lack of forward thought by TVNZ.

Nothing to do with TVNZ Freeview is a consortium made up a group of broadcasters .

DVB-S Mpg2 can handle HDTV and SDTV in the same mux .

DVBS2 gear has backwards compatibility of course .

Each 27 MHZ half transponder is capable of providing a tad over 32
Mbits using FEC 3/4 and MPEG2 this would allow two 11 mbits HD TV
streams and three SDTV streams so you have

TV1 HD
TV2 HD
TV3 HD
C4 HD
TV6 SD
Stratos SD
TVNZ NEWS SD

and three left over .

You can buy a DVBS2 receiver nothing stopping you. Other than finding one Europe has a few Tellesatellite magazine has adverts for them.

Hope you have a large bank account you won't get much for less than $700

DVBS2 card for NZ $210 ish (Im sure there will be cheaper models)

My point was, since Freeview were setting up a 'new' system in NZ, why not use the newer standard.
Not much point of buying a DVBS2 when Freeveiw is only going to use DVBS.

"...however. DVB-S2 is considered required for HDTV via satellite for more bandwidth-constrained areas like New Zealand.""

617277 2007-12-06 04:29:00 Because there were supposedly 20000 existing FTA receiver watching tv1-2 etc for years before FREEVIEW became official. Also they are keepng compatibilty with Skys DVB S transmission.

also a little bird say Sky are in negotiations for HDTV channels at the moment.
