616968 2007-12-02 06:50:00 And just a reminder that Ozzy will be playing in wellington easter 2008 along side Kiss. It will be Ozzy first NZ show since 1997, and if you were at that one you won't want to miss this one.
My eldest boy was only a week old when I went, the mrs was't happy that i left for 3 days, but I told her it was either 3 days or forever.

616969 2007-12-02 07:12:00 And look how Sabbath died after Ozzy left. Even with the likes of Ronnie Dio and Ian Gillan it never quite recovered

For some reason I thought his name was Tommi, no idea why

Heaven and Hell sold more then the 2 or 3 Ozzy lead albums that preceded it.

The Mob rules sold a million copies in its first year.

Black Sabbath was dead before Ozzy left, Reinvigorated with Dio, then spent a decade or 2 as a collapsed dinosaur. Dio done another album with them in 91 which once again sold a million copies.

Pretty big numbers when you look at other bands that were huge in their time failing to sell 10 000 copies of an album.

Of course, Ozzy done all right for himself, In my personal opinion only No More tears stands out as an above average album, None of them compare to his work with Sabbath, and hes turned himself into a clown with that TV crap. And his latest work sounds as generic and digitised as the last song from Britney Spears.

Undecided about whether to go see him in Wellington, and I see Lordi are going to be there as well. :xmouth:

616970 2007-12-02 07:13:00 Metal history started in 1970 when Black Sabbath released their debut album.Balls. Led Zep started out in the late 60's.

I reckon they defined the genre way more than Black Sabb.

There sound definitely played a huge influence on some bands within the Heavy Metal Genre, They themselves never played metal, were never considered a metal band. The only thing they defined was Led Zep.

Agreed. Led Zeppelin were a blues rock group extending what Cream, the Who, and the Stones were already working with.

Black Sabbath were and still are in a class of their own. I'll grant SurferJoe that Iron Butterfly provided a kind of West Coast heavy rock with In-a-gada-da-vida. I still play that album from time to time.

Tony Iommi is one of my guitar heros. Sabbath did lose it's way when Ozzy left but they have continued to produce good heavy rock. IMHO their first five albums are definitive of the genre.

Uriah Heep were also good for a few years and had a Kiwi bass guitarist Gary Thain for a while.

616973 2007-12-02 09:01:00 What I don't care for is the anger in the lyrics. It's where the "heavy" part is. It's just depressing and very Maudlin.

Interesting........ Modern rock stems from the negro blues and they are often sad songs with more than a hint of anger. What is ironic is that the electric guitar enabled young white men to express that anger.

I recognise that heavy metal is a particular taste - it's adherents are mostly young white men. Why this should be I cannot say - doubtless someone has done a thesis on it. The "dark" power chords of lead and bass guitars call to our core emotions - it really is energising in some primeordial way.

616974 2007-12-02 09:13:00 I dunno about that, The Pantera concert I went to couldn't have been described as white, nor the slayer show I went to, and South America is insane for metal, Much more popular there then in North America. Likewise Japan, with many bands moving their and never bothering to release albums in the Western markets.

The Megadeth DVD from Brazil has to be seen to be believed, Hundreds of thousands of people, singing the guitar parts.

Argentina.....now that was a crazy crowd! At one part actually drowning out the band!

Black Sabbath was the archetype, check out that movie A HeadBangers Journey, he did a study of sorts and traced most sub genres etc

Not a bad watch even for the non metal heads. And the satan guys are so theatrical its hilarious!
