617312 2007-12-02 09:01:00 Does anyone have any tips on advertising a website specifically to New Zealanders (a product selling website)?

I would be happy spending $100-200 a month for a solution that worked well, but wouldn't like to put too much money up upfront before getting a feel for the results I can get from it.

I am open to non-online advertising methods too.

I've tried Google AdWords, but can't seem to pay less than about $0.65 a click, which is expensive. I've had it running for a while and have paid $30 so far for 47 clicks which is pretty ridiculous, right?

Word of mouth is usually the best way to promote a business. Promoting a website is pretty hard, and you could spend $1000s on it. www.firstrate.co.nz specialise in promoting website, but I am not sure how good the results are.
I have found the google ads isn't particually effective these days, as everyone is using it, and the price per click has rocketed. You can pay $1 or more per click in some situations, and the person clicking on the link may be your competitors, and you would never know. I have also set it so the ads only appear in NZ, but I still get people from the US and Australia clicking on the ads, so I don't think it is all that accurate.

617314 2007-12-02 10:00:00 Well I googled it so it's not hard to find.
I have just two points, both in your terms of service. Under pricing, it reads like it was written by a 13 year old for 13 year old. And under Payment, the last couple of lines reads a bit unprofessional if not bordering on threatening, not that I would be threatened by it:2cents:

God, you're right!

"If you cannot pay immediately," is a horrible way to start a sentence...

I will rewrite that, and fix the spelling of "kilometre". And gosh, 2.5 x $30 is not $70 :o

Any specific tips on writing it to ensure I don't end up with something just as bad? Except not having it so cluttered etc and getting rid of pointless clauses like rounding :p

617316 2007-12-02 17:07:00 Slightly OT (ok quite a way OT :p) anyone ever noticed how close the Giga Computers logo (www.gigacomputers.co.nz) is to the Gigabyte logo (laptops.techfresh.net)? Myth (110)
617317 2007-12-02 17:29:00 If you or anyone has any, feel free to share it :)

I'm just not sure if I'm allowed to post the address here....You are quite right, spamming ones site is against the rules.

The rules do say that a member can drop a link that is safe, and that there is no financial benefit for the person dropping the link (I look forward to the royalty cheque :p)
Also, if a thread is about a way as to how best to advertise a site, I think we need to see the site - www.pc-care.co.nz so that we can help as best as we can (as per what PF1 is known for)

617318 2007-12-02 22:50:00 Thanks Myth.

I agree - I just didn't want anyone thinking that I made the thread to spam my site :)

I also agree with robbyp that word of mouth is the best form of advertising, however I already try to maximize this and need a lot more sales than word of mouth alone can currently provide.

617319 2007-12-15 04:57:00 Update:

I let AdWords run after building what seems to be a great campaign. It ate up my $20 per day budget at about 75c per click (average).

After spending about $100, I got two customers. $50 per customer, compared to around $20-35 from Trade Me.

This could work well if I could get the cost per visitor to come way down. Any ideas? I'm not set on Google AdWords - anything is fine if it works.

But now you have an idea of the traffic I need. 130 or so visitors from AdWords generated two sales in around 4 days. Is that reasonable? About four times this much traffic would replace Trade Me, but it would need to cost about a third as much or less.

My average click-through-rate on AdWords was around 0.5%.

617320 2007-12-15 05:19:00 And the other place to show your website address is on all off-line things - stationery, envelopes, car, fence, Christmas cards, local dairy, supermarket, other free signboards like the library.

Local school newsletters (offering a discount payable to the school) might be an idea too.
