777791 2009-05-29 00:29:00 Okay, just working away as per normal on the PC this morning... just browsing, also running a defrag, nothing too power intensive. All of a sudden, power goes completely off on PC. No warning, no BSOD, nothing. At first I thought it was a power cut, but it was only the PC not working.

The green power light was flashing a slow blink - on, off, on off etc.
Tried rebooting, but absolutely nothing happened.
Turned power off at the wall, waited, turned it back on again nothing at all. No lights, no response, nothing.
I'm guessing it's the power supply? I don't have a spare power supply to check, is there any other way I can tell for sure?

The PC is pretty old, and looking inside the case the power supply says Novia Model MS-300W. The power supply is a box screwed to the side of the case inside, with a whole bunch of wires coming from it... I guess there's no way of physically telling what's wrong as something must have gone wrong inside the box??
Does it sound like the power supply has just failed?? Any other tests I can do, to make sure it is that and not soething else failed?

If I take that box to a PC shop, wires and all, should I be able to get a new one at a fairly reasonable cost? I'm assuming they must all be quite similar with the same wiring??? I've never had to replace one before.

I do plan on getting a new PC later this year anyway, but I'm not quite ready just yet to do it, so all I need is a cheap replacement power supply to tide me over until then...
I'm going to Plam North Saturday morning, so if anyone can recommend a decent PC shop there that would stock a replacement power supply, that would be good too...

Thanks!

777792 2009-05-29 01:04:00 Sigh.

Why not get a power supply in Wellington if you think you need one?

The PSU is the probable fault but then do you have the ability to put the wires where they are supposed to go into the motherboard and other things like hard drives or optical drives.

Can you borrow a PSU from a friend?

777793 2009-05-29 02:38:00 Why the sigh? I thought it was a fair enough question to ask?

I'm not in Wellington at the moment, in visiting parents in a small town, Palm North is the closest main centre.
For the same reason I don't have a friend clsoe by at the moment to borrow a PSU.
Never mind, I'll buy a replacement power supply and try that. I thought maybe it might be something else, so I was checking here first

777794 2009-05-29 03:05:00 Well I did wonder if you have the expertise to fit a PSU and as your location was Wellington I thought you may have better results with people I actually know there. Sweep (90)
777795 2009-05-29 03:23:00 You could try to jumpstart you PSU.

777796 2009-05-29 03:27:00 All sorted. Picked up a replacement power supply already, swapped it out, and so far all seems good. Fingers crossed!
The old one was a crappy brand (Novia) so it's done bl**dy well to less 5 or 6 years I guess. PC is a Athlon 1400 so that shows you it's age!

777797 2009-05-29 03:46:00 I am pleased you have the issue sorted.

What PSU did you buy?

777798 2009-05-29 03:54:00 I'm guessing it's the power supply?

Novia Model MS-300W .

Yes .

Crap .

No you don't . You buy a decent quality brand, there's no such thing as tide you over . You buy the decent one now and use it when you upgrade later .
You've just experienced what cheap crap PSUs do .
You should just hope it hasn't taken any other components with it .

I've got a Novia something here.. The insides look even more anorexic than most Hyenas I've seen :crying

And it's all full of bloated fukkyyou (www.urbandictionary.com) capacitors!

777800 2009-05-29 05:46:00 Yeah, I was lucky it didn't take any other components with it. Everything is back to normal it seems.
When I first bought this PC all those years ago, I didn't know any better about the power supplies, so got whatever the shop put into it. Now I do know better. And when I get my next PC, I'll be sure I get a decent PSU then. In the meantime in this machine, there's really no components I'd re-use anyway so if it did take any other components out it's not a great loss. And all my data is backed up too.
