618319 2007-12-06 03:23:00 I'm thinking of connecting to Woosh in Invercargill but have had so many bad stories that it might not be worth the hassel.

Woosh set up early in Southland and many people have connected. I tend to hear bad stories from tech people who aren't average users so anyone here have any experience?

I did talk to one gal who shrugged, said she lost the connection from time to time but generally was satisfied.

Yup...(if you are talking about woosh wireless) i had woosh before moving to slingshot... it was ok for net surfing and emails.. got disconnected every time it rained heavily or in the morning during winter due to fog. you can forget about gaming... my ping used to go up to 800. I dont think i was ever able to play online ever..

618322 2007-12-06 05:53:00 My work b/band is thru Woosh wireless - nr Gore with good line of sight to Hokonui transmitter. Speed is fine for email / general internet etc. Haven't had any issues with dropped connection.

I don't use it at home but is fine for me in the work situation.

618323 2007-12-06 06:02:00 I can give you a whole heap of phone numbers to contact Winston.

Seriously that would be the worst decision you make.
Go from nice broadband to that.

I have a load of people in the shop lately complaining. Connection dropping, not making connection, speed complete crap.

I aksed if they contacted Woosh. Yes. Including directly in Invercargill.
That was 2 months ago and they haven't had even a call never mind the promised tech to go out.

Theres several round here too. One cannot connect at all at his place, so he bought everything down here to my place. It connected but speed was 121kbps.

618324 2007-12-06 06:10:00 Averages a pretty steady 800 kbps for me but I do have good clear sight to the transmitter.

I must admit I wouldn't consider it at home but depends on your circumstances.

I would be interested to know how it compares with vodaphones 3G data plans, in terms of speed and reliability .

618326 2007-12-06 07:28:00 I have heard that on wireless connections "latency" is the problem.

en.wikipedia.org(engineering)

It is inherent in the delivery system and cannot be avoided except at very high transmission frequencies.

618327 2007-12-06 07:28:00 The rule with Woosh is that you have to be very close to one of their towers to get semi-decent service. I used to up a hill, and I could see the building which the Woosh transmitter was (about 1km away). I would get worse-than-dialup speeds most of the time, with horrible latency. somebody (208)
618328 2007-12-06 08:00:00 I know your views Pctek and that's why I'm hesitating. Just interested to see if there are any happy customers. We've got one here. Winston001 (3612)
