778799 2009-06-01 07:24:00 A mate has an old Compaq Evo P3 laptop that’s HDD failed after all these years.

No big deal, but he had his name on the Compaq Splash Screen when the computer first booted. We thought it must have been a small file on the HDD which we couldn’t find, but lo and behold it is still there with a new HDD fitted.

This led me to conclude it must have been written to the BIOS somehow????:confused:

Anyone able to explain this phenomena? Could be useful. :D

:thanks

778800 2009-06-01 08:14:00 Most probably a BIOS feature.

Similar to the Asus MyLogo, allows you to use your own pic for the BIOS POST screen.

778801 2009-06-01 10:38:00 That’s what I was thinking Blam, but the BIOS in this old computer is real basic being a: Compaq 686DF V2.47 10/13/2001.

The crowd where he purchased the Computer must have had someone who new how to flash the BIOS and embed his name without wrecking everything else.

I’m still curious because I’ve never seen it done before.

We're talking about the BIOS boot screen here:p

Not the Xp Boot screen, anyone can change that(done it myself:D)

778805 2009-06-01 11:38:00 B.M. It'll be a BIOS option. Most compaq systems have had it for years, certainly well before the 2001 build date of your one - I've seen 1998 bricks that had it. Erayd (23)
778806 2009-06-01 12:04:00 That's strange, where is the actual image stored? What happens if you pull out the CMOS battery? WarNox (8772)

It's not an image, it's a text string.

778808 2009-06-02 01:53:00 I have a Compaq Deskpro EP...

In the BIOS setup is an option to add a text string that can be displayed at POST.

I think you'll find that is just the thing
