778679 2009-05-31 09:31:00 Hi
I have a 4 year old machine running XP Pro. It is connected to a wireless network, but I cannot connect to the Internet. I have used the repair function, - I have connection to wireless network but not internet. The Error Message states that the network did not assign a network address to the computer.
I have tried to manually set the address but nothing works.
The Ethernet card is a D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G510. The router is a D-Link DI 524 and the Modem is a D-Link DSL-302G. I know the wireless network is working as my laptop connects perfectly.
I tried wiring the faulty PC directly to the modem - still no joy.:crying
The connection was working fine until I removed service pack 3 and some older updates to try to get it running faster. I have run the XP installation disc, but nothing...so now I don't know what to do.
Help Please!

778680 2009-05-31 09:53:00 Download and run Winsockfix (www.snapfiles.com) Once the wired connection is working - try removing all wireless security to test the connection - then once it connects, put the security on. wainuitech (129)
778681 2009-05-31 10:48:00 Please bear with me, how do I disable the security on the wireless? EFFIGY (12530)
778682 2009-05-31 22:48:00 I'm thinking my issue is with the IP address. Winsoc Fix resets it to automatic which means that the comp cant even join the network. When I manually add the numbers it connects to the wireless network, but I have found at least 3 numbers that work that way -how do I establish what the correct IP adress, Subnet Mask and Gateway are? I think I have the correct DNS numbers? EFFIGY (12530)
778683 2009-05-31 22:52:00 Put the ip of the router in for the gateway, the subnet should have come up, after you entered a valid ip address in (under ip address). The DNS server ips will be your ISP's DNS server ip addresses. You can put the router's ip in for the preferred DNS ip address. Speedy Gonzales (78)
778684 2009-05-31 23:15:00 Nope - no joy - when I use cmd ping 10.1.1.1 - I get *Request timed out* Packets sent = 4 , Received = 0
10.1.1.1 is the router.
When I run ipconfig - I get Connection specific DNS suffix : *blank* should there be a number in there?

778685 2009-05-31 23:20:00 So, WHAT have you put under the wireless LAN properties?? Under TCP/IP? You have enabled wireless in the router right? So what service pack in installed? Install SP3 again. Speedy Gonzales (78)
778686 2009-06-01 01:04:00 It says in ipconfig.
Ethernet Wireless Adapter Connection:
Connection Specific Wireless Adapter:
I P Address...................................: 10.1.1.50
Subnet Mask.................................: 255.0.0.0
Default Gateway............................: 10.1.1.1

In the Network Connections/Lan/Properties/TCP/IP/Properties I have typed the same. Preferred DNS server is 123.100.71.1 and Alternate DNS is 123.100.71.2
Will I have to down load SP3? or will it still be on the machine somewhere?
EFFIGY (12530)
778687 2009-06-01 01:15:00 No if you uninstalled SP3, it wont be on the hdd. I think you need SP2 or 3 (3 would be better), if you want wireless to work. I dont think SP1 supports wireless. And if there's no service pack installed at all, then you probably wont be able to get wireless to work at all. Okay that ip, subnet and gateway look good. Whats 123.100.71 and 2 belong to? Your ISP's DNS server ip addresses? Speedy Gonzales (78)
778688 2009-06-01 01:15:00 A second machine - laptop - is using the same wireless network with no problems. When I ran its ipconfig to compare its settings, I get
IPv4 = 10.1.1.3
Mask = 255.0.0.0
Gateway = 101.1.1
but it is on Vista .... so I'm soooo confused. >.<
