778633 2009-05-31 08:46:00 I have recently had a few problems/errors with my hard drive .

It is a Sata 500gb Seagate HDD .

I had posted about the problem earlier here:

. co . nz/showthread . php?t=98767" target="_blank">pressf1 . co . nz

I had swapped the Sata cable and all was well for a while . But recently the problem has returned . I get a Windows error message before the system freezes and when I view the problem in eventvwr it displays the following warning multiple times:

ID: 51
Source: Disk
Version: 5 . 2
Symbolic Name: IO_WARNING_PAGING_FAILURE
Message: An error was detected on device %1 during a paging operation .

and then this error

ID: 55
Source: Ntfs
Version: 5 . 2 . 3790 . 1830
Message: NTFS - File system corrupt

I have ran chkdsk and that shows no errors . I have ran memtest as well and that looks clear too .

Do you think that the hdd is dying or does anyone else have any ideas how I could diagnose the problem?

Thanks as always guys .

778634 2009-05-31 08:54:00 I recently had a similar problem, did all the same things as you, eventually I found out I had faulty capacitors on the motherboard. What you need to do is get a torch and have a good look over them all, if any look like they are bulging or got liquid or anything that looks like it was once liquid on the tops or side then its your likely cause. FYI, capacitors should be flat or slightly sunken on top. kewefella (2092)

Thanks Kewefella .

I have done as you have suggested and have had a good look with a torch . I could see no bulges or capacitors that looked liked they were leaking or had leaked . When you found your problem capacitor was it quite visibly obvious?

778636 2009-05-31 09:22:00 hmmm, they were reasonbly obvious to me. Have a look in google images and search for leaky capacitors. Blown caps don't always leak either but they're swollen looking. Hope this helps kewefella (2092)
778637 2009-05-31 09:38:00 I've had a good hard look. Everything looks ok. No swollen or even slightly misshaped capacitors. Cheers for the help.

Edited: if you had bad caps they are quite obvious, with bludging or brown/yellowish gunk.

778639 2009-05-31 23:03:00 Hi wainuitech. Thanks for the link...

I have ran memtest overnight and this showed no errors. I do not have another PSU to test with but am confident that the Enermax 485w PSU that I use is ok.

Can anyone suggest any other diagnostic tools for HDD's? I have ran chkdsk and also Seagates Seatools, both show no errors...

Thanks.

778641 2009-06-01 02:09:00 I have just noticed that my HDD - Seagate Barracuda 11 3.5 500GB SATA 7200RPM 32MB Cache HDD ST3500320AS - could be possibly one affected by a recent problem with these drives.

After some forum reading there appears to be few people that are having the same problem(s) as me with the same drive.

I downloaded the Seagate Drive Detect program and this shows my firmware as SD15. There looks to be an update on the seagate website for the affected drives....

seagate.custkb.com

Has anyone had any similar problems with a seagate drive? Or has anyone successfully updated their firmware?

778642 2009-06-01 02:14:00 As long as you follow the instructions, updating firmware works fine.

Lots of people have done it already, including me
