778441 2009-05-30 23:58:00 Hi guys,

I'm wanting to add create a video using windows movie maker, but some of the videos are in formats like .mp4, .mov, .mkv, etc.

Is there any way to make windows movie maker support these files, or do I have to find another video editor? If I do have to do the latter, are there any good free ones?

I don't really want to have to go through the hassel of converting these videos to .wmv.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

778442 2009-05-31 00:10:00 Dont think MM will open those formats. What you see, is what you get. Depends if you use XP or Vista.Vista may support more formats. This has been mentioned on here before (www.any-video-converter.com) Dont know how good it is, never tried it Speedy Gonzales (78)
778443 2009-05-31 00:26:00 If that doesn't work Handbrake certainly will convert them.

Here is the supported file types from MM's help menu

Supported file types
You can add content to your Windows Movie Maker project either by capturing content directly in Windows Movie Maker or by importing existing digital media files. The content you capture in Windows Movie Maker is saved in Windows Media Format. However, you can also import existing Windows Media-based content as well as other common file formats.

You can import files with the following file name extensions into Windows Movie Maker to use in your project:

Audio files: .aif, .aifc, .aiff .asf, .au, .mp2, .mp3, .mpa, .snd, .wav, and .wma
Picture files: .bmp, .dib, .emf, .gif, .jfif, .jpe, .jpeg, .jpg, .png, .tif, .tiff, and .wmf
Video files: .asf, .avi, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv

778445 2009-05-31 00:51:00 Thanks for the help guys.

I might just leave them converting over night, but before I do I might do a google search for some WMM alternatives.

778446 2009-05-31 00:59:00 Not sure if VideoSpin supports all those formats.
http://videospin.com/
Virtual Dub supports most of them.

778447 2009-05-31 01:48:00 I did a google search and found this (http://jahshaka.org/), but it wasn't really what I was after :(.

I then had a look through some of the old PC world disks, and found a copy of Premier Elements 4. So I installed it and was hoping for the best, but when I wanted to start my 30 day trial, it gave me this (www.imagef1.net.nz)error :(.

I might give Video spin a go tomorrow when our data cap has been reset.
