778047 2009-05-29 11:02:00 Hey I have my server running WHS but i want to replace it with Ubuntu Server Edition.

The server has 3 drives, 2x 640gig and one 500 (the os drive). There is currently about 400gig free on it.

What would be the best way to uninstall WHS and install Ubuntu? My experience's with WHS have taught me that if you don't know how to do something dont do it.

I need to empty a hard drive somehow but keep all the files (media mainly) intact.

Can someone give me a run through on the safest way to do al this?

Cheers

Then during Ubuntu install select where to install

778049 2009-05-29 11:23:00 what i meant it i have 400gig free, so what i want to do is effectively remove the 2x640's with the data on them leaving just the os on the 500gig, which ill then format hueybot3000 (3646)
778050 2009-05-29 11:37:00 Well do that then

Since the media files are on separate drives, there's no problem

Unplug them while you install, probably a good idea

778051 2009-05-29 11:42:00 yeah but when i look at drive usage the files are all spread evenly over the drives. so how do i know what is where? hueybot3000 (3646)
778052 2009-05-29 12:00:00 I don't understand.. do you have some kind of RAID array? Agent_24 (57)
778053 2009-05-29 12:03:00 no...

have you used windows home server? from what i gather data is spread across all the hard drives which are grouped into one pool. the trouble with this is you cant just unplug a hard drive

778054 2009-05-29 12:16:00 Thats correct - WHS makes two Partitions - the first is 20GB, this is for the OS and any other programs you may want to install on it .

The remainder ( in non tech terms) just keeps adding up - meaning if you have a 500GB drive, then add in another 500GB, you will see it as One big 1TB drive, add in another500 and it shows as as 1 . 5TB, and data is spread across the whole sha-bang - if one drive fails you can lose data, but not all .

I'm actually Now using two WHS's, only one has the remote access and connector software .

The smaller One is mainly for separate backups and copies of Software, and currently only has two HDD's, As Shown Here ( . imagef1 . net . nz/files/Storage . jpg" target="_blank">www . imagef1 . net . nz) - it used to be my main WHS, so still has full workstation backups ( must clean those out one day) .

The main WHS has full system backups, movies, music, photos, software - and gods knows what else :)

Out of Interest, why change to Ubuntu ??

Unless you have a good knowledge of Linux, I know from playing about with it, its a lot harder to set up and have working than WHS with the same functions mainly daily backups, remote access, complete system recovery of work stations .

Once WHS is set up its almost forget about it - let it do its stuff .

778055 2009-05-29 12:22:00 No I haven't used WHS... But I just read this:

Microsoft's Windows Home Server employs drive extender technology, whereby an array of independent disks (JBOD) are combined by the OS to form a single pool of available storage. This storage is presented to the user as a single set of network shares. Drive extender technology expands on the normal features of concatenation by providing data redundancy through software - a shared folder can be marked for duplication, which signals to the OS that a copy of the data should be kept on multiple physical disks, whilst the user will only ever see a single instance of their data.

Sounds like you'd probably need to copy the files off to another place, then install Ubuntu and copy them back

778056 2009-05-29 12:26:00 @ wainuitech - yeah ive used whs for while now with no worries but i want to do more with web serving and emails which linux seems much more suited too. a recently installed ubuntu on my laptop and i love it so that also contributed to it.
