2009-05-31 12:53:00 | nope no go I have a problem though, one of my drives in the server is on its way out. it just popped up with a heap of corrupt errors. so right now backing up what i can to my desktop before pulling the unhappy drive just what i need! The fact that you can't ping in either direction indicates that for whatever reason, the two machines can't talk to each other. How are they connected to the network? Can each machine access the internet ok?

2009-05-31 13:21:00 | yep both are fine, and my desktop can access whs no probs I think your first step is to figure out why the two servers can't talk to each other - that appears to be the fundamental problem at the moment.

2009-05-31 13:43:00 | I think your first step is to figure out why the two servers can't talk to each other - that appears to be the fundamental problem at the moment. the fundamental problem for me atm is that I have a sick hard drive :clap But something isnt right with the whs install, I can access my vista desktop both ways. So the server seems to be unhappy, must of been the comment at wainuitech coming back to bite me. Il get onto some diagnostics in the mornin. Cheers for your help so far somebody

2009-06-01 00:47:00 | whats the difference between ubuntu and xubuntu? | hueybot3000 (3646) | |
2009-06-01 00:51:00 | Just an Update to above , installed Ubuntu 9.04 -- While it could see the WHS in network and other PC's on the LAN Ubuntu wouldn't connect to any of them or respond to a ping commands both ways -- until I did the following two things -- Installed Samba Instructions here (www.howtogeek.com) then changed the workgroup to MSHOME using gedit, ( which is what mine is) -- then it would allow access and could share both ways. Edited: and after 3 reboots. Also one item I did notice, when I put Ubuntu on a static IP address(as it was getting my sons IP since his PC is off at the moment) every thing went to a crawl :sleep Put it back to auto and all was well again.

2009-06-01 00:56:00 | whats the difference between ubuntu and xubuntu? Not 100% sure, just felt it was more user friendly, but Ubuntu is more advanced in features. One item I was reading, Ubuntu are at some stage doing a Ubuntu Home Server. Looked in google, but the home site was dead - doesn't look too promising on being out any time soon.

2009-06-01 01:16:00 | ...but when I get to the command sudo smbpasswd -a <username> I get bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline' Whats that mean? It means you forgot to remove the brackets from your command. Replace <username> with your actual username. Wainuitech: Ubuntu and Xubuntu are exactly the same thing- they just have diferent default desktop environments (gnome and xfce respectively).
