Try and learn about the products, you will automatically over time, but whenever you have spare time, just walk around and see what is in the shop. Make sure you know your stuff when selling a computer or something similar, the problem with DSE, Harvey Norman, Noel Lemming ect is that all of the sales people will talk up every product there - with no knowledge of the components used ect. For example, if someone came to me and asked about a laptop running Vista Basic on 512MB ram - I would tell them the truth about how it will run like a pig, and if they want a functional laptop, to get XP with 1gb ram - or vista with two. The customer may see this as upselling - or they may be someone who has done some reading into it and understands what you are getting at. I think the main thing is not to make crap up to make a sale, know what you are talking about. |

Nothing worse than a sales person making up stuff or trying to bluff their way. I give kudos points to those that just say "I cannot answer that, but I will find someone who can." :) Second tip: Don't assume females in an electronic/computer shop know nothing. :p  have a read of this article www.usatoday.com |

I think saying "I dont know but can find somebody who is more knowledgable in this specific area to better assist you" is better than saying "Well Im Microsoft certified and know for a fact that you cannot pirate Windows, its just not possible" and looking like a total idiot when people know you can. Not what I meant at all. If you don't know something then find out. "Don't know" is NOT an option of a good salesperson. By "Don't Know" I mean "sorry I don't know, but I will find out." By asking other staff members, looking it up in a manual or internet or DSE computer etc. I went in to a DSE last week looking for something, the salesperson did not know and asked a couple of other staff members, looked it up on the computer, then went off and asked the supervisor. They eventually directed me to an opposition shop where I got what i needed, I was very impressed by all the trouble they went to. Another example in the same store i wanted Thermal Grease. The young bloke did not know what it was but rather than say they did not have any went off and asked and I got what i needed which as usual had been moved to another location in the store. |
