Sounds like a porn site

617774 2007-12-04 19:04:00 Congratulations on the job.

A lot of advice already given, but here is mine none the less.

DON'T pounce on people as soon as they walk through the door. People often know roughly what they want when they come in so be prepared to help and answer questions as and when they need it. If you don't know something then find out.

"Don't know" is NOT an option of a good salesperson.

Get to know where things are around the store.

My problem with DSE is that they like to move stuff around, so each time I walk in knowing where the thing is that I want it has moved leaving me to walk around the store like an idiot looking for its new location, I find this very annoying indeed.

617777 2007-12-04 19:45:00 What I'd like to know is what stuff you guys like to her about when you get into a store, or maybe just useful tips and knowledge about computers and electronics.

Cheers

DSE used to be an electronic shop. Its not now, its just an electronics appliance shop.
Jaycars is the only real one left that I know of.

I don't want to hear anything when I go there. I just want to buy whatever it is I went in for.

The only things I have bought are:
Phones
CDs
Isopropyl
Multimeter
Screwdrivers

A friend commented to me the other day he was talking to a slaes guy about MP3 players, the guy said he'd done an Electronics degree.

He had no idea about the analog to digital in them.

So if someone asks a technical question, don't try and bull**** them. You might find they know more than you.

Alot of stores do this. I think it is for security reasons, so that would be burglers don't get to know the layout of the stores.

I doubt it, I don't impulse buy anywhere, not even supermarkets which seem to expect it. I go get exactly what i want and leave.

You are not the norm, and therefore not the shopping target.

617781 2007-12-04 22:43:00 Firstly, congrats on the job :)

Secondly, I have to disagree Bantu.
I think saying "I dont know but can find somebody who is more knowledgable in this specific area to better assist you" is better than saying "Well Im Microsoft certified and know for a fact that you cannot pirate Windows, its just not possible" and looking like a total idiot when people know you can. Its happened, my Microsoft Trainer even tried to convince me of that, amongst other things like CD Rom drives requiring a driver upgrade in XP... but we wont go there...

Jen summed it up nicely I think!
Id just like to add (Although this may be personal preference), if asked a question, don't give a story for an answer. I really feel for the poor sods who go into the store and say "I need help with this, where can I download the Driver" and then the store assistant launches into some great big long spiel about driver availability, the different versions, incompatibilities etc when all he need say is "Goto our website, DSE.co.nz, you can get the link from there"

Lastly, you dont know everything, I dont know everything, and the customer is NOT always right. Be humble enough to realize this, but wise enough to know when you're right and the customer needs to be put in their place. You are not a doormat and deserve to be treated with respect :)

617782 2007-12-04 22:51:00 Like most stores I go into, I already know what Im after before i go . So in saying that, I like to be left alone . I don't like it when a sales person does that 'can I help you?' approach .

To be honest I will ask them if I need help . But not everyone is like me so I guess it is part of the drill .

The only questions I will ask is:

Where would I find these . . . . . ?
or
Can I order some of these?

Thats it .

Hope you enjoy your job .
