617763 2007-12-04 06:28:00 Hey guys, I got a new job working as a salesman for a brand new dick smith electronics which so far I love. Its challenging and enjoyable just talking to like minded people.

What I'd like to know is what stuff you guys like to her about when you get into a store, or maybe just useful tips and knowledge about computers and electronics.

Cheers

617764 2007-12-04 06:32:00 Depends what the customer is looking for, on what questions will be asked.

And whats in the store at the time. That the customer would buy.

617766 2007-12-04 06:39:00 It is good to work somewhere you enjoy. :)

First tip: If you do not know the answer to a question, admit to that and get someone else to help. Nothing worse than a sales person making up stuff or trying to bluff their way. I give kudos points to those that just say "I cannot answer that, but I will find someone who can." :)

Second tip: Don't assume females in an electronic/computer shop know nothing. :p

617767 2007-12-04 06:41:00 good on you for getting a job well done

as to what people like to hear it's mostly KNOWLEDEGABLE salespersons......not bull**** artists as many turn out to be so the more you know your products the better for the customer !

617768 2007-12-04 06:45:00 Thanks guys for your info (not telling what store it is :D)

Any good sites to find decent info on printers and cameras. Also scanners seem pretty basic, anyone give me the run-down on stuff that makes em good?

617769 2007-12-04 06:49:00 What's the company policy on letting staff play with display models, to get a feel for them? When I bought a digital camera about 4 years ago, the salesperson at the shop (not Dick Smiths) had obviously played with the camera, so she knew where all the options were and was able to be very helpful in demonstrating what it was able to do, and answer any questions I had. somebody (208)
617770 2007-12-04 06:58:00 Try all the scanners you have in store to scan a 35mm negative and then print out the result in A3 size. The exercise will open your eyes to many things, and you will learn a lot that you won't get out of the manufacturers spiel.

(Hint. It will be a very poor Photo Lab indeed that cannot handily beat your efforts with even the best of the readily available scanners. In a year or three, that may well change.)

Good luck with your endeavours, your co-workers do not normally display any interest or knowledge of the products they are attempting to sell. An attitude like yours is a refreshing change. :)

617771 2007-12-04 07:00:00 Congrats on finding a job that you like and working with - and serving - people that you care about. I concur with the above comments.

All you need to do is aim to be as professional as you can, read as much as possible from various sources, and follow what the boss says. Then you will be fine.

Sometimes DSE gets trashed here on PF1, by some members. But DSE cannot really compete with specialist computer stores, especially for price. DSE is a good general electronics store with an admirable return/exchange policy, and usually has good sale prices. I recommend DSE to those who want face to face help and want to walk out of the store with the product they bought (rather than order online).

Our local DSE store has friendly helpful staff who are knowledgeable about the products. But if I want expert advice, I come here and read what Speedy and others say, or read reviews on tech sites along with user comments.

617772 2007-12-04 08:24:00 Any good sites to find decent info on printers and cameras. For digi cameras you can't get much better than DPReview (http://www.dpreview.com/). Greg (193)
