620068 2007-12-10 22:56:00 Are the nz police checked regularly for their fitness levels after they have entered the police force? Fitness testing when joining the police force is compulsary and if you fail it is bye bye to joining the police. No offence to the police but i have seen very big police officers working the beat and i doubt they could keep up with an offender. markh (12164)
620069 2007-12-10 23:24:00 Maybe they rely on the younger, fitter cops to chase offenders down and they then sit on them until the paddy wagon arrives??? :D

But I believe there are ongoing fitness tests (same for firefighters), but maybe, like eveything else (including school qualifications) they've been dumbed down so more people can pass and feel good about themselves....

620070 2007-12-11 10:11:00 They have fitness tests but they aren't compulsory. And they are only once every two years. There is an amount built into your salary which is a one-off payment every two years when you pass the test. If you don't sit the test or pass the test then you miss out on that part of your salary.

The test is the same test as the pre-entry PCT. It only takes two minutes or so. It's not really a fitness test but more of an agility test and a straight out sprint.

And i wouldn't be too concerned about 'big' officers chasing offenders - they already have the upper hand due to the weight of the vest and all of the appointments the Police have to carry. Call in the dogs!!!
