619013 2007-12-08 02:51:00 A quick question here: How would you say "I am from New Zealand" in Maori? I remember it is something like "Nor Aotearoa Ahu", but not 100% sure.

Cheers :)

I am from NZ ... No Aotearoa ahau

However, the word 'No' implies that your roots/ancestry are from the place stated (in this case Aotearoa). If I were to answer that question, my reply could be 'No Livorno ahau' or 'No Ireland ahau' etc etc

If the question were 'Kei hea koe?' ('where are you now') then the reply would be 'Kei Aotearoa ahau'

619019 2007-12-08 05:35:00 Who said the Maori name for NZ is Aotearoa? As I understand it, the Maoris never had a name for the country as a whole. They did not even have a name for themselves.

Perhaps if you were to delve deeply, you may find that Aotearoa was dreamt up by an englishman. I think his name was Williams. Have a read of Michael King's History of NZ. That should put you straight.

Thanks BM and winmacguy for giving the topic the serious answer that question deserves. Great stuff.

The point is that the name Aotearoa is the term used most commonly and is the more widely accepted term for NZ (by Maori and non Maori). Nuff said... you can keep going should you feel the need

619021 2007-12-08 06:30:00 Actually, the name New Zealand would fit that criteria much better. Metla (12)
