779635 2009-06-04 10:54:00 Ok so, in the last few days after a LAN with a few mates my computer started failing. This problem had occured before in the past and sorted itself out after a few hours of random periods of frantic restarting or turned off altogether. This happened so for a day i was happily playing RSV2 then the next day i went to school. Came back to find the windows didn't start up properly message (the choose start up one) but it also had some additional data saying that a file was corrupt or unreadable.
I googled the problem and it told me to run the windows recovery console, and run the CHKDSK command which it did and it then told me that some files were corrupt or damaged beyond repair. So I also googled this to find that a fresh reinstall of windows was required and with that the loss of large amounts of data. But the second suggestion and the one my dad also suggested was to buy a new harddrive.

So we buy the Hitachi Deskstar P7K500 500gb HDD

www.hitachigst.com
^^link

and i go to install it...and it isn't detected at all.

So we played around with the cables alot and tried a spare cable the connects to the SATA 1 slot and the hdd, no dice. So we connected the old HDD back up and it was recognized so through the process of elimination we figured that it was linked to the new HDD unit rather than a cable fault.

aditional note the hard drive when the pc is turned on is 'powered' that is to say that you can feel the HDD hum.

the BIOS refuses to recognize it so after scratching our brain and using google we didn't come up with anything that worked.
We need help

Details:
Mobo: Asus K8V-MX (no link CBB looking)
Cpu: Amd Athalon 3000+ 2.0 Ghz (i think)
XP operating system is what i am installing
Hitachi 500 gb Deskstar p7k500
2Gb ram

I also tried a software based Jumper settings utility which also didn't see the HDD.

I'm going to bed now, so i won't be able to provide additional infromation until tomorrow morning

779636 2009-06-04 11:01:00 Sounds like a faulty HDD, if its not even detected by BIOS, I would return it

779637 2009-06-04 11:03:00 try another sata port if you have one available
if not put in you os hard drive sata port and see if the bios sees it if it does means your second sata controller dead
if not hard drive fault take it back

779638 2009-06-04 11:07:00 Would this apply ? (support.asus.com) Since it applies to your mobo as well, if thats a SATA II hdd? Did you try setting it to SATA 1 / 150 mode? Click on 2, then click on the 2nd one. Why can't my SATA-II hard drive be detected on VIA VT8237 chipset based motherboard?

Why can't my SATA-II hard drive be detected on VIA VT8237 chipset based motherboard?

Answer

This may be caused by the fact that VIA 8237/8237R South-bridge chipsets do not provide upward compatibility with SATA-II hard disk drives at 300 MB/s. These HDDs may not even be detected at POST. To install a SATA-II hard drive, users need to lock the drive at 150 MB/s data transfer rate by HDD jumper setting. Please refer to the following jumper setting from HDDs manufacturers or visit their website for latest updates.

779639 2009-06-04 11:17:00 There was a problem with these drives a couple of years ago (their nickname was Deathstar), don't know if it applies to your drive (maybe old stock?).

779640 2009-06-04 11:32:00 speedy if that the case do you think he will be able to up date his bios to accept the sata 2 speeds as to me be annoying to buy a sata 2 and only get sata 1 speeds
i checked asus for mobo bios update got these results but nothing relates to sata (i have heard of third party bios updates on other mobos but dont know if i would trust these's) if someone has spent the time making one

maybe only way to support that drive for that mobo is buying a sata pci card if as speedy says you cant change the speed to 150 MB

779641 2009-06-04 11:38:00 Nope because as it says the chipset doesnt support SATA II. So, if you updated the BIOS it probably wouldnt help / fix it. This post (vip.asus.com) sounds exactly like your prob. Same solution sounds like the FAQ I found Speedy Gonzales (78)
779642 2009-06-04 11:50:00 this my last shot lol

try this
click start
right click my computer then click manage when that snap in loads
click disk management
then right click on drive and Initialize the drive
Format the drive
Assign the drive letter
Initiate changes

779643 2009-06-04 11:57:00 If the BIOS cant see it, Windows wont see it Speedy Gonzales (78)
779644 2009-06-04 12:03:00 speedy you right
if you cant change settings eg jumpers
get a sata (raid) pci card they cheap theses days
if you can not take back your drive to where you purchased it
or maybe upgrade your motherboard although if you got an agp mobo could be expensive as i know my mate brought a agp video card and paid top dollar for it like sdram theses days
