Hi all. I have a problem getting my two hard drives to talk and be compatible with each other. On their own, they work fine. I have the 20 GB that came with it, a Compaq Presario 5420 AU running XP Home SP3. The other newer on is a 40 GB. If I connect them together, the 40 as master and 20 as slave when I try to boot up BIOS says I have no hard drives. But disconnecting the power to one, or the other, they will boot up. But only one at a time. I have now got XP loaded on each hard drive but would like to get them working together and the 20 GB as a backup/document drive. Thanks for any advise, Ian. |

Hi, are you using the HDD pin to select master\slave, and are you connecting them in order on the IDE cable? |

Um, yes, I believe so. |

Because the 20GB has WIndows on it so it should be the master not the slave. |

Thanks, Pctek. Yes I can see that might be a problem. Windows was on the 20 GB drive but when I had the problem of trying to get them to co-habitate I unpluged it booted up to the formated but blank 40 GB drive which I am now using. What I want them to do is get along with each other so I can have a backup drive. |
