779283 2009-06-03 02:13:00 I've got 2 laptops that I was using as work machines, no longer working on that contract but I was able to keep the laptops.

I'd like to freshly reinstall them with Windows XP Pro, but I don't have the installation media that came with them.

I do have volume license media for Windows XP Pro though.

I'm hoping it could be as simple as:
- save off the current drivers on each laptop with some sort of driver utility
- fresh install from the volume license media and use the product keys on the base of each laptop
- import the drivers

Any thoughts?

779284 2009-06-03 02:16:00 NO, you cant use VLK volume media with OEM or Retail license keys..... SolMiester (139)
779285 2009-06-03 02:17:00 Of the keys at the bottom of the laptop don't work, you may have to ring MS for a new key.

For driver importing I recommend DriverBackup:
sourceforge.net

Can perform batch restoring of drivers and without the program itself

779286 2009-06-03 02:17:00 Aha, thanks for that.

Has anyone tried someone similar to this:
www.howtohaven.com

Where you make installation media from a current system.

779287 2009-06-03 02:27:00 Well, i386 used to be the install directory for NT, however havent tried for XP, I'm not sure if the setup executable is there any more.....
If you have License Keys on the bottom of the lappy, just get any XP media ISO....I'm sure someone on the board will be close enough to you to cut a copy!

Eh??....He has the key, but needs media!! MS WILL NOT give him a Volume Licensing Key to go with his media.......the licensing is totally different

779292 2009-06-03 06:36:00 I know if you have the i386 folder in the original drive you can do a repair install, BUT after reading the linked article-- Well had a bit of time so, checked it out -- IT WORKS !~!

Copied ONLY the i386 folder from a XP CD ( this would, or should already be on the laptops drive, possibly hidden in the C: drive).

Checked the WIN51IP", "WIN51IP.SP1" and "WIN51IP.SP2 files contents on the original XP CD - and they are exactly as the articles says - made them up as per the article, Section 3 and saved in C: drive.

After that I did the following - bit easier >>>

Downloaded and run nLite (www.nliteos.com) pointed the install location to the i386 folder on C: - next etc till you get to the selections, told it to make a bootable ISO - made it, burnt the ISO to a CD, and put in a blank HDD on another workshop PC -- booted perfectly and currently installing XP.

This should work perfectly on the laptops as long as the i386 folder is there, as its using the original install folder, then you can use the COA on the bottom of the laptops.
