Shoot from cover. Learn to use the "lean" keys (default "E" and "Q"). Throw grenades (set up the mouse scroll wheel to throw them with a press).

Use automatic weapons in short bursts (not "spray and pray"). Use the iron sights (right mouse click).

619849 2007-12-17 22:14:00 Also, run 3DMark06 if you have it and it will show artifacting especially in the forest scene or the "Arctic Freeze" - (3DMark06 is a large download, so if you don't have it, download ATI Tool from here. (www.techpowerup.com) ) Run the "check for artifacts" tool and it will generally show up artifacting pretty quickly. If you get artifacts with these tools then it does suggest that it's not simply a problem with a game.

Thank goodness for our new net connection at work. Just moved into our new office complete with a decent net connection. What would have taken me all night to download at home (3dmark) came down just now blazes. So I'm going to check it out tonight.

619850 2007-12-17 23:51:00 Well I'm going to run 3DMark tonight, but from doing some research on the net it seems that heat-related corruption of memory was a fairly common problem with 7900 GT cards - lots of people describing the same symptons I have which ended up with them getting a vendor replacement under warranty.

And in looking over at Ascent, I see that 512MB 8600 GT cards can be had for less than $250! Hells bells. I think Santa's going to help me out of this problem.

Although the bigger picture might be the need for some better cooling in my case.

yeah get the 512 if you can, I got the 256 and it's pretty sad, it was not much of an improvement over a 7600GT actually.

Funny the first one I got had faulty ram but it was not heat related (so far as I could tell - I got the core up to 99*C according to ATi tool and it was stable as a rock. play some game for 15 minutes and it would die while running at 76*C) a replacement fixed the problem

A Radeon 2900PRO can be had for around $270, and would be a far better buy than the 8600GT. Only downside is that you may acidentally take half the NZ grid offline when you turn your PC on, but you wont need to heat your house in winter.

619853 2007-12-18 01:23:00 I'm worried I'm cooking my components as it is, although I've got a huge 12cm fan in the side and a standard fan at the front. Biggles (121)
619854 2007-12-18 01:25:00 The 2900PRO uses a dual slot cooler and exhausts the hot air out the back of the case so as long as you have semi decent air flow it should be alright. Making sure you have sufficent power would be more of a concern. Pete O'Neil (6584)
619855 2007-12-18 02:08:00 What's it draw? My power supply is decent enough (pretty sure it's at least 500w, forgotten since I put it together). Biggles (121)
