619008 2007-12-10 08:22:00 [QUOTE=kahawai chaser;622879]Having living in Howick, Bucklands Beach, and now Otara for 30 odd years, the recent violence around Howick, seems to coincide with the expansion of the Botany Downs center and Highland Park with their bars and clubs, and easy purchase of alcohol at the supermarkets. There is also the drag strip - Te Irirangi drive that connects the more affluent east to the south.

I know that generally there is, and probably always will be, a different mindset between residents of Howick and nearby Otara (ever since about 1968 to today I have observed). In between the diverse suburbs is Botany Downs that sits like a buffer zone, generally housed with Non New Zealander's by Origin, and are likely to be unaware of any earlier differences in Otara and Central Howick stemming from the 1960's. If the youth's from both areas, often with quite different attitudes and backgrounds converge together - that is likely to cause confrontation and sadly worse.

I know during the 60's to even today, very few Howick people ever visited Otara (only to attend Manukau Tech), and vise versa. Often Otara drink parties were often full on - sometimes for days to a week, which I use to attend, and some people were pretty staunch, or ex con's, young solo mothers, or young parents (at 16 yrs with kids). But in Howick parties (1975 - 1984) everything was seemingly picture perfect, people were educated, at 17 going to university (like me), parents employed, nice streets, houses etc.

You are a brave man Otara scares the hell out of me. Even hearing the word makes my heart race a bit. I once had to visit a mate who was in a spinal unit there In the end I didnt visit any more because of the stress of driving there.
I have had to pass through there on the way to East Tamaki sometimes at night. I just pray the truck dosent break down.
I think that some troublesome people in Otara are going out to East Auckland for a bit of crime. It was about the same time as the Otara chopping centre.

Unfortunately this is very true. Truer then most people think.

619010 2007-12-10 09:16:00 "God Save The Queen"

God save the queen
The fascist regime
They made you a moron
Potential H-bomb

God save the queen
She ain't no human being
There is no future
In England's dreaming

Don't be told what you want
Don't be told what you need
There's no future, no future,
No future for you

God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves

God save the queen
'Cause tourists are money
And our figurehead
Is not what she seems

Oh God save history
God save your mad parade
Oh Lord God have mercy
All crimes are paid

When there's no future
How can there be sin
We're the flowers in the dustbin
We're the poison in your human machine
We're the future, your future

God save the queen
We mean it man
We love our queen
God saves

God save the queen
We mean it man
And there is no future
In England's dreaming

No future, no future,
No future for you
No future, no future,
No future for me

No future, no future,
No future for you
No future, no future
For you

Sex Pistols

a prescient look at the future from the past?

You'll be fine. I was there earlier this year in the shopping centre. No problems what so ever. I studied at Manukau Institute of Tech for four years and had no problems either. Plus I live fifteen mins walk. And never got mugged on the way. It's all in your head. :2cents:

That reminds me, I must try out the flea market.
