2007-12-09 22:39:00 | actually caught one guy trying to break into my car despite having caught him once already and moved my car onto the party property into plain sight. chased him out onto the road where he jumped into a waiting car. i swear the kid was only 14:groan: now anyway, that bit is really the only on-topic issue; high school kids breaking into cars, in plain sight of the car owners after being caught once already.... i wonder if they'll stop when they reach 18, or will they learn the police don't really do much about theft and carry on? kids driving into groups of people, throwing rocks at cars on the motorway, stabbing people for little or no reason - and last week a teacher was assaulted by a student! something is going wrong somewhere... but it's not striking all the kids, so IS it video games and tv, or does things like parenting (or lack thereof) have something to do with it?

2007-12-10 05:35:00 | Having living in Howick, Bucklands Beach, and now Otara for 30 odd years, the recent violence around Howick, seems to coincide with the expansion of the Botany Downs center and Highland Park with their bars and clubs, and easy purchase of alcohol at the supermarkets. There is also the drag strip - Te Irirangi drive that connects the more affluent east to the south. I know that generally there is, and probably always will be, a different mindset between residents of Howick and nearby Otara (ever since about 1968 to today I have observed). In between the diverse suburbs is Botany Downs that sits like a buffer zone, generally housed with Non New Zealander's by Origin, and are likely to be unaware of any earlier differences in Otara and Central Howick stemming from the 1960's. If the youth's from both areas, often with quite different attitudes and backgrounds converge together - that is likely to cause confrontation and sadly worse. I know during the 60's to even today, very few Howick people ever visited Otara (only to attend Manukau Tech), and vise versa. Often Otara drink parties were often full on - sometimes for days to a week, which I use to attend, and some people were pretty staunch, or ex con's, young solo mothers, or young parents (at 16 yrs with kids). But in Howick parties (1975 - 1984) everything was seemingly picture perfect, people were educated, at 17 going to university (like me), parents employed, nice streets, houses etc. But perhaps things might come to a head after many years of sub isolation or even a perception of that, between such suburbs and their residents. So when there are avenue's to connect or reach both suburbs, such as bars, clubs, new highways, popular amenities, etc, then trouble is likely to brew up between the "us vs them" from two distinct areas and therefore backgrounds. Unfortunately this results in unnecessary loss of life...

2007-12-10 05:46:00 | Lived in south auckland (manurewa and paptoetoe) while I was growing up. Used to sweet as until it turned into a living dump. Lived in central. Nice at night because you cant see most of the graffitti at night. I actually liked it but bad people make a bad place. The last year I stayed on Russell Rd, 2 stabbings in my back yard, a car crashed into my letter box, constant graffitti on my fence, drunks asleep on the driveway.... who wants to live in a place like that?

2007-12-10 06:15:00 | Rob - I agree, but I have learnt to some how isolate my mind from what appears to be only getting worse at times in my area. I know Manurewa has changed socially over the last 30 years. More youths segregating, easy access to drugs and booze, hard core rap, lack of education, young girls street walking, etc. Of course the more mature one's like us can only reflect, but what can really be done to at least alleviate or hopefully prevent such occurrences? The scope I guess for prevention is wide and might involve a lot of work by a lot of community groups and so on. But in the meantime unnecessary violence just keeps reoccurring... | kahawai chaser (3545) | |

2007-12-10 06:50:00 | Well you'll have to get used to it because there are at least another twenty years worth and more of disenchanted youth coming up. What you are seeing now is the vanguard of the first young people growing up since the middle 80's when it was predicted that in the future there were going to be a lot of social problems in the society due to the economic mismanagement starting with rogernomics and just getting worse as time went on. Chickens coming home to roost?

2007-12-10 07:11:00 | Yea, the only thing I rekon would work is capitol punishment. Bring it back and let fear do its job. it's not the punishment that prevents a crime, but the certanity of getting caught perhaps if a cop came rolling by every 10 minutes or less people would at the very least be more discreet that said, alot of crimes should have heavier sentences. capital punishment is dangerous - you could kill an innocent man, and guilty suspects will stop at nothing to escape apprehension if they're going to kill you, why not shoot the witnesses to the crime and any cops chasing you?
