620554 2007-12-12 20:03:00 I have to admit that I do love a good accent especially, Irish, English, South African ... the list goes on. I really love the South Island accent. I lived down there when I was little and for a few years, (a few years ago) and still speak a bit funny (according to my family). For instance ...... I would say .... "Over there is their bags" but I pronounce their as thur. My son and mother still try to correct this slight flaw. :annoyed:
You would have been better to say......

Over there are thur bags.Or better still..Thur bags are over thur.

620555 2007-12-12 20:22:00 If you had met a gorgeous pom,you would still be there. That is if her accent had put you off.

LOL I spend 3 years driving 18-35 yr olds around Europe etc (The best time of my life). Yes one of my passengers was a pom and yes I did marry her. That is almost 25 years ago.

620558 2007-12-12 22:40:00 Accent is not defined by language. Accent is an word in English.

From my point of view I believe Nigel has the correct answer to the first question.

What do you mean by gauge BTW? I think a gauge is a form of measuring.
I would gauge the accent by listening and working it out if I can understand the person talking.

The one word that makes real sense in your post is "context".
For example the word "Desert" can be used in various ways.

Accent may also be used as a term for a grave

I think every person has an accent of some variety. He/She speaks different.

One of my cats go, "Meiow" and the other says "Yeep".

I still understand which cat wants to do what and when.

I was asking if English was the 'first' language or accent to figure out the differences between accents. Hard question to ask I guess. I think I may even have it wrong there too:xmouth:

620559 2007-12-12 23:22:00 From what I gather you were pondering who was the first to make the distinction of accents within languages. Like for instance, long long time ago .... John from clan 1 said to Jane from clan 2 ..... did you realise that you roll all your Rs and speak slightly differently from they way we speak ...... therefore you have an accent?????

I could be waaaaaaaaaaaay wrong but either way it is indeed a hard question to ask and one I find impossible to answer but great for those who like to ponder these things.

Now heres a stupid question from someone who only speaks English ...... Do people who speak French, for instance, speak with different accents within their own language?? I certainly wouldn't be able to tell as I don't know the language. And I already said it was a stupid question but please feel free to reiterate that point. :p

In France it is a root of some discrimination.

Yes they do. My mother is Welsh and she says the South Wales people can't understand a word what the North Wales people say even if they both speak Welsh.

PJ may be able to confirm that. :p
