620315 2007-12-11 20:04:00 I have caller display on my phone, as well as showing the number when someone rings it also saves the number and time of the person who rang when there was no one home. I have rang some of these numbers and they have turned out to be people or companys I don't even know. When you question them about ringing your number they deny they didn't. I wonder if caller ID could be the problem. Anyone else have caller display on there phone and have had any such experiences.

620316 2007-12-11 20:09:00 With many companies the number sent forward is the main number rather than the direct dial number of the person that actually called you. The receptionist/operator wouldn't have any idea who made the call. PaulD (232)
620317 2007-12-11 20:15:00 . . . don't know about NZ phone service, but yes . . . the number can be spoofed and you might be getting calls from people who don't want you to know who they really are .

Here in the US . . we get the name/number/time too . . . but I never respond to 800, 888 or 900 extensions or area codes . I am sure there are some that are toll-free there too . . and they are most likely phony numbers .

I get free local/local long/long and international calling . . but there are limits in the International area codes . . I still don't want to respond to the numbers I don't recognize . The reason?

There are spoofed numbers that get you to dial into them and they run a very high toll-rate . . even if you have unlimited calling service .

It's in the international treaties that the telephone services can collect for any calls that go to them, and as they have then already collected from your national service . . . . . . your local service then has every right to collect from you for whatever you do .

Most of the baddies are porno-dialers or callgirl dating services that don't really exist . . they live on the phone charges that you generate by calling them back .

So . . even though it LOOKS like a toll-free number, it COULD be a very steep charge that you will have to pay for being curious .

Don't call them back .

620318 2007-12-11 20:18:00 Hi Trev

I have an exactly the same type of phone as you. Never ever had any experiences like you are getting. All numbers listed on my caller ID when I am away from home, are genuine callers to me. Never had one that has denied ringing me. Its a bit of a mystery for you alright.

620319 2007-12-11 20:22:00 Slightly OT - on my cellphone, I never answer calls that display "Blocked Caller ID". To me, it's common courtesy to let someone you are calling see who it is. In my case it's mostly recruitment agents ('cos I'm a contractor), although there are exceptions - but if it's important, they can leave a message.... Maybe I'll get back to them.... :) johcar (6283)
620320 2007-12-11 20:44:00 Just to save any confusion, this is a land line phone. Yes if we get a call which displays as private or just some random numbers, not a phone number, we don't answer. Also had a friend call yesterday when I was out and when I spoke to them they denied calling me.

620321 2007-12-11 21:38:00 Why don't you just call Telecom and ask . . . :horrified

Ok, that is not going to work . :groan:

It's very common for people to know that they hit the wrong autodial button on their phone then hangup and call again. They weren't calling you, possibly didn't realise that you were on the wrong button.

I have 3 customers whos number comes up as private.
They say its because they use their phone to chase bad payers.
They are now used to my reaction when they ring me especialy after hours.
they have to do all the talking.
