779185 2009-06-02 23:06:00 I sit with a friend's lappie again and it starts up with a disk read failure. I ran Ultimate Boot Disk and one of the tests told me that SMART has been tripped. How do you "untrip" SMART. Any way to repair the obvious problems, or is this one stuffed? Any test I can run on UBD that will tell me precisely what's wrong?

779186 2009-06-02 23:11:00 I am no expert like some of the guys here but SMART can usually be turned off in the bios. You should be able to access that without HDD affecting it.

Although it may mean a deeper problem so use at own risk.

779187 2009-06-02 23:12:00 Did you run the hard disk manufacturer's diagnostic from the UBCD?

You can turn SMART off in the BIOS, but generally when SMART gets tripped it means the hard drive is knackered, and the disk read error would go along with that theory.

Possibly you'd be able to clone the dodgy hard drive to a new drive, assuming it is actually dodgy. Do you know what brand it is?

779188 2009-06-02 23:19:00 Yeah well he has been getting the warning that "A failure of your HD is imminent ........." for the last two years so it's no real surprise. I ran the Western Digital test (I couldn't find out so I ran the various brand tests until I got one that was recognised) but it won't go further than 70% and then it stops and goes back to the D: prompt.

779189 2009-06-02 23:24:00 The drive is definitley faulty. Time for a new hard drive, or new laptop, or whatever, depending on what your friend wants. :) wratterus (105)
779190 2009-06-02 23:28:00 You *might* be able to copy some data off it from a live CD.

Do it quick!

Sounds like its on its last legs..

779191 2009-06-02 23:33:00 Blam - how? I could only get to the Bios and can't access the c: drive at all and I've tried all methods known to man.

779192 2009-06-03 00:08:00 take the HDD out of the laptop & attach to a desktop computer, either using a SATA cable if the drive is SATA or using a IDE HDD enclosure if the drive is IDE. Then you will find how much data you can get (if the drive isn't fully stuffed) Nictech (14748)

Download Knoppix or boot off an Ubuntu live disc. Hopefully it'll see the drive. Or use a USB to SATA/IDE adapter($25 on TM) then plug in your HDD to a computer.

I couldnt be bothered then...if somebody had a 2yr warning and hadnt transferred their data, I would just laugh at them.....they deserve to lose their data
