622263 2007-12-18 03:43:00 I received an advert in the post advertsing a new store called Norman Ross. This new store has opened in the Harvery Norman centre in Lower Hutt, and the advertising is almost identical to Harvey Normans advertsing. It appears that these are too seperate stores, (rather than Harvey Normans being renamed), but they are advertising the same stuff and they are operating right next to one another, although the Norman Ross prices seem cheaper. Does anyone know what the story is behind these businesses, as it seems a waste of money duplicating the same store next to one another. They both appear to be Australian owned, and they appear to be run as francheses.
Is it a similar thing to Noel Lemmings and Bond & Bond who are also owned by the same company as one another, but one sells F&P whiteware, while the other sells another brand?

""Electrical goods and computer suppliers in NZ were told last week of the plans by Harvey Norman to launch the alternative brand targeted at the lower end of the market in a big barn-style offering," the article said.

"They were told Harvey Norman aimed to open 30 Norman Ross stores in NZ in the next 24 months, with the first earmarked to open in November in the Wellington area."

Norman Ross was the name of the original Harvey Norman chain.

622265 2007-12-18 05:29:00 To differentiate between the franchises, the Norman Ross stores will have to employ at least one staff member who can read. ( This may be the cleaner, the deliveryman, or a shelf stocker. Certainly not middle management. Hardly Normal staff need not apply.) Blindness is acceptable, as no staff member is expected to see the light.
In the interests of hygiene, visitors and customers should thoroughly wash and dry their hands after any conversation with a staff member.

Not bad again R2,

Though I have to say,of late have bought two cordless phones and found them faulty,I was emotionally prepared to get stuck in and let them know what I wanted,I needn't have bothered, they replaced before I could get a word in.

I bet that startled you; who would have expected it?
(Par for the course would be to get accused of talking from too far away and straining the things. )

622268 2008-12-08 22:33:00 Hi Guys, the Answer to the Question: Who is Norman Ross and what relationship do they have with Harvey Norman? Harvey Norman originally started as Norman Ross, then when the company went through changes the original owner and director Norman Ross was ousted, and companies name was changed to Harvey Norman, then a little while later Norman Ross started his company again, in Austrailia under a different name due to restraint of name use, but in New Zealand there is no restriction on him to use his original name. They are direct competitors to Harvey Norman. More Competion the better the prices become.:clap Kiwipicman (13178)
622269 2008-12-08 23:20:00 Next time your in one their stores, ask for a aerial to be plugged into a TV. In the Wgtn store they didn't have one and thought I was stupid to be asking. They assume people only watch DVD's or cable etc. I offered my own indoor one, and was told to get lost. Think I'll stick to LV Martins. They did find an aerial and plugged it in.:( Peter H (220)

Norman Ross was the name of the original Harvey Norman chain.

Not true, Norman Ross was a well known Australia retailer, Gerry Harvey worked for them. Gerry parted company with Norman Ross due to some management differences and launched his own chain of stores with the advertising slogan "We going to get you", this was a not so subtle jibe at Norman Ross and indeed Harvey Norman succeeded to grow very quickly while the Norman Ross chain which included Waltons Department Stores soon declined very rapidly, so much so that eventually they ceased trading in all the eastern states of Australia, if my memory serves me correctly the last Norman Ross stores to finally close were in Western Australia where their corporate HQ was based.

Think what you will about Gerry Harvey, but you cannot deny he is a very smart "hands on" businessman.
