621511 2007-12-15 20:50:00 A Children’s Hospital that doesn’t need money because the children might vote NZ First. :groan:

I’d be surprised if NZ First expected to get any votes out of the poor little souls.

May be better to give the money to the "Exclusive Brethren"? That way they might get some votes. :D

Makes me sick! :angry

621512 2007-12-15 21:02:00 I agree, Winston's grandstanding makes me sick too.

621513 2007-12-15 21:06:00 The hospital shouldn't be used for political grandstanding, If Winston was so generous as to make a substantial donation then he could have done so at anytime without dragging all this baggage into the equation.

If it were up to me, I'd make him pay the donation he promised, out of his own pocket, and repay the money he mis-spent on promoting himself during the election.

621515 2007-12-15 21:45:00 I think that Starship did the right thing here. Consider what would have happened if they had accepted the money: Winston gives $158k of taxpayer money to Starship.
Starship accepts.
Anyone who protests the donation gets labelled as uncaring and evil - in an election year, this could be rather damaging.
Rather than complain that Winston is reassigning huge amounts of taxpayer money with no authorisation, the whole mess is swept under the carpet.
Now everyone has an excuse to subvert public funds for their own ends, and if anyone complains they have the simple excuse of "but he did it, and it was OK then - why can't we?"
Contrast this with what actually happened. Clearly the staff at Starship are smart enough to figure out the above scenario, and decided (quite rightly) that being used as a political pawn wasn't appropriate. Now anyone is free to protest the unauthorised reassignment of public money for personal gain, without risking severe political fallout. Winston gets publicly shamed for trying to use Starship as a pawn and for his misuse of public money, and hopefully the money actually goes back where it's legally supposed to go.

If Winston actually cares about Starship (as he claims) then a substantial private donation will probably follow - to do anything else is to publicly admit having a political interest in the affair. Somehow I doubt his ego could easily reconcile such an admission.

...

It wasn't "legally supposed to go" anywhere. NZ First could have decided not to repay the money at all, it was entirely voluntary.

Then new legislation was passed that retrospectively made this legal, however to avoid political fallout most parties have paid the money back anyway. NZ First is the only party that hasn't paid anything back.

621518 2007-12-15 22:15:00 The welfare of sick children should rate ahead of any political grandstanding .

I suppose if the other parties had given their funds to them it would have been ok .

That $150,000 could have gone towards Child Cancer Research or simply making the kids threatened lives a little happier .

Personally, I think the political parties that have made an issue of this by trying to take a moral high ground at the cost of sick children may well have s . . t in their own nest .

They have with me anyway .

Steve Williams (Tiger Wood’s Caddy) has given millions to Starship . I suppose one could argue that was points scoring for the game of Golf .

Obviously the Management of the “Starship Foundation” have a political agenda and the sick kids don’t count .

621519 2007-12-15 22:33:00 Starship indeed did the right thing. Winston didn't give that money out of pure generosity and kindness. He used that money as a tool for political gain.

I'm sure those kids will understand when they get older.

And just how can you be so sure there would be any political gain?

A lot of those kids won't get to be much older and if the do they'll be like me and not understand.
