780552 2009-06-08 02:47:00 Hey guys.
Can anybody tell me a good way to keep a track of how much data is being downloaded through the internet on each of the 3 computers being used in my flat. Our data cap keeps getting obliterated each month & I want to know who is using so much, especially since Orcon put up its excess data charges.

Cheers,
Nictech (14748)

WebGauge (www.webgauge.co.nz)

Stick a BB monitoring program on each PC:

Something like this:

780554 2009-06-08 03:33:00 Thanks Blam. That webgauge one is what I want but I can't afford to pay for it. The RAS monitor one doesn't look too legit. This is harder to find than I thought it would be. Nictech (14748)
780555 2009-06-08 07:22:00 If you're comfortable with Linux (or willing to learn!) and have a reasonable grasp of networking, you could re-purpose an old PC (I use and old P3 550) with Smoothwall - all you need is a spare PCI slot for an extra NIC (you need one for incoming traffic, and one for outgoing).

It's an open-source alternative to Microsoft's ISA server, and part of what it offers is usage monitoring.

download.cnet.com
http://www.netlimiter.com/
file.xtreme.googlepages.com

Nofam, thats a great idea:)

I use IPCop with this addon for monitoring usage:
blockouttraffic.de

I think monowall would probably work also

BTW What is your current router?

Unfortunately that is a bit far beyond my means, good idea, but not for me at the moment . Thanks anyway .

780558 2009-06-08 09:15:00 @Nictech: The problem you're having with your flatmates seems to be quite a common one, and was one of the reasons for developing WebGauge . I have literally spent hours searching online for something which would do the job, and simply could not find anything .

One option is to install software on each flatmate's PC which keeps track of how much data they're using . I think I've seen blam6 recommend some software (Netmeter I think it was called) to others before, however this of course relies on your flatmates being honest and not disabling it .

If you have any questions regarding WebGauge, please don't hestiate to get in touch via the website, or this thread .

PS:
@blam6: Thanks for the recommendation .

780559 2009-06-08 10:46:00 Webgauge, I am going to assume that you work for webgauge & if that is correct then I commend you for responding to a question about your product/service.
The webgauge product is 100% what I want & need but unfortunately is not a viable option for me at present & I already have a modem router but I will definately look at your product again if I come up with the money.
Thankyou
