621571 2007-12-17 08:16:00 Beetle, as has been said before, if they’d taken the money gracefully and shut up, the whole thing would have blown over by now.

The Politicians would have called each other sissy names and moved on, the kids would have benefited from the money and they wouldn’t have upset my blood pressure.

But no, they thought they would take a holier than thou stand and embarrass Peters, but all they’ve done is give him more mileage and miss out on the dough.

Absolute twits.

621572 2007-12-17 08:28:00 But they i think did what they did because they believed it was right. not to gain party poking points at the politician.

Can you say that when you make a decision of this possible magnitude or for these possible health benefits........ that you would do it for the money......... not for what is seen as the right the right thing to do? i guess it comes down to ones personal morals...

anyway who says that money would have gone to the kids directly........ between the giving and the getting their is often a lot of hands in between....... so how much actual money will save the child?
Sometimes all the money in the world isnt enuf to save someones life.

621573 2007-12-17 09:07:00 Political grandstanding at its finest, nothing more, nothing less
Like the U.S candidates of old, would kiss the babies.. just to look good and win votes

Starship did the right thing

Incidentally, one of the radio DJ's suggested this: whenever you get a traffic fine for whatever reason, instead of paying the correct authority, we should donate it to charity. Same thing

Peters is clutching at straws now, has been since he lost his seat

621574 2007-12-17 11:15:00 one must ask why the money could not have been given anonymously?

i saw a picture on the news of a giant novelty cheque - it was obviously a publicity stunt and the hospital didn't want to become a political advertisement

NZ1st was just trying to spend that money illegally on campaigning twice, otherwise they would have done it quietly

what is NZ1st's policy on health? do they want to increase funding? that would be a better approach than illegally donating money that isn't theirs

and what if starship was required to return the stolen money? they'd be left out of pocket....

621575 2007-12-17 11:51:00 Right - using whatever money you can get by any means, within reason (use your common sense here), to save children's lives, your stated mission

Wrong - not saving lives by refusing money offered because of supposed high moral stance, read "hubris"

Absolute twits .

I couldn't disagree more .

This would certainly NOT have blown over . Winston Peters would have donated $158,000 of illegally obtained money to Starship when they were required to return it to the taxpayers . A LOT of people would see it that way .

Do you think Starship refused the money for fun? They believed (and I agree) that it was wrong . It's not "moral high ground" - it's fundamental morals .

What NZ First effectively tried to do was donate NZ taxpayers' money to a charity, while having it 'feel' like THEY were donating . The motives are political and nothing more . Even if they had good intentions, it is not their money to donate .

How would you feel if a thief stole money from you, came clean, but then donated the proceeds to a charity instead of repaying the money? Just in case you wouldn't mind, it's wrong .

621577 2007-12-17 18:59:00 Thanks for your support B.M.

This thread shows that our friend Winston is STILL making political gain out of Starship. He will be rubbing his hands with glee.

"Look at those idiots talking about me! Seven pages! Most threads only have two or three. Chuckle, chuckle, political gain, chuckle, chuckle."

What was it that the Hollywood stars used to say? "Any publicity is good publicity."

621578 2007-12-17 20:31:00 Your absolutely right Roscoe .

The political naivety of some on here defies belief .

I do hope they’re all under 18 .

Some of Peters’ tactics have got Muldoon written all over them .

I see in another master stroke he has left it until February to make a decision on who will be the worthy recipient .

Then he will get a bonus lot of publicity . :D

He’ll probably make an announcement then and further delay the distribution of the money .

Love the man, or hate the man, he is a master tactician . ;)

I just wish the “Black Power” gang turned up at Starship with a $158,000 donation .

That would make things interesting . :D

I think you underestimate the stupidity of some voters, after all he has been voted in on a number of occasions.

Strange but true.!
