Two new mammals found in Indonesia

Scientists have discovered what appear to be two new species - a tiny possum and a giant rat - in the "Lost World" area of western New Guinea. "It's comforting to know that there is a place on Earth so isolated that it remains the absolute realm of wild nature," said Conservation International Vice President Bruce Beehler, who led the expedition. "We were pleased to see that this little piece of Eden remains as pristine and enchanting as it was when we first visited." During the June expedition that included researchers from the Indonesia Institute of Science, the team documented two mammals, a Cercartetus pygmy possum, one of the world's smallest marsupials, and a Mallomys giant rat, both apparently new to science. "The giant rat is about five times the size of a typical city rat," said Kristofer Helgen, a scientist with the Smithsonian Institution. "With no fear of humans, it apparently came into the camp several times during the trip." The scientists said they plan to return to the area late next year or in 2009 and expect to find additional new species of frogs, mammals, butterflies and plants.

You'd probably need whole jars of peanut butter and huge gin traps for this one..

621977 2007-12-20 23:22:00 That 'giant' rat is a baby one compared to these rats which my Great Dane/Mastiff cross used to catch in the bundu behind our old house in Northern Rhodesia, they have huge incisors and are quite dangerous, that new one they have found looks like and acts like a pussy cat compared to a CANE RAT:

621978 2007-12-20 23:43:00 ...You just need to put a bit on with your fingertip on the trigger tray.... before setting the trap. ;)

The :badpc: method works too if the mouse climbs onto the monitor, but you need to be fast.

621979 2007-12-21 05:03:00 No, the trap that I am talking about, "The New Mouse Trap" is integrally safe if you hold it the right way whilst baiting it, you need to see/use one to understand what I mean, check one out in your supermarket, we caught another mouse with our one yesterday, peanut butter bait (crunchy) of course.

A very elegant design, wish I had thought of it. Three pieces of molded plastic and one spring loop.

en.wikipedia.org know them well, having spent quite a few years in southern Africa.

Stealing sugar cane from the fields was a local past-time, and coming across these beasties was a matter of honour for us 7-9 year olds.

621982 2007-12-21 23:49:00 I caught another 2 last night, and I think there must be another one because the traps didn't have any peanut butter left in them.

At least these ones don't seem to be eating any of my food (except what I put in the traps)

621983 2007-12-23 01:19:00 Perhaps the mice haven't worked out how to operate your can opener. Rats would just bite through the can. :groan: Graham L (2)
621984 2007-12-23 03:14:00 Get a female mouse, put her in a glass jar and play some sexy music, this will tell if your mouse can dance or not, or if it is gay or not. Then once it goes to the glass, smash it with a big concrete sledge! Problem solved haha! rob_on_guitar (4196)
