622175 2007-12-18 23:08:00 As a registered legal car thief, we could naturally go out for ourselves, but the payoff isn't worth it.

Nope, not at all. Especially considering it's much easier to simply go on strike these days.

622176 2007-12-18 23:32:00 I have been an AA member for about 40 years. I have found them fantastic.
Locked out of the car a few times they quickly got me in. An electronic problem they sent a tow truck, loaded it on and took it to a Toyota dealer.

My Father and Grandfather were also members dating way back.

But it only covers the member driving the car, and does not cover the car itself. If you have got someone who isn't a member driving, they wouldn't be covered. Many new cars now come with a free roadside insurancce for 3 years, and states roadside rescue is cheaper than aa and covers the car, and not a the person.

622177 2007-12-18 23:37:00 If I sign up my 14 yr old now as a member and she is in a friends parents car who is not a member then my daughter could call AA. Something new'ish for AA according to a recent newsletter.

If I call AA it does not matter if I am driving or not.

622178 2007-12-18 23:50:00 I use to be a member about 20 years back, but I learnt how to fix cars, and so did not need them anymore, and with mobile phones I could contact friends/family. But now with advanced electronic ignitions, might be time to re-join... kahawai chaser (3545)
622179 2007-12-19 00:22:00 Yes I am a AA member.I have been on the AA plus membership for years now.

Cut and paste from AA website:
Wherever you breakdown:

Free car towing If that breakdown is more than 100km from home:

Free recovery of the boat, caravan or trailer you were towing at the time
Rental car and/or emergency accommodation options
Transport home if needed
Help with a shattered windscreen
Medical assistance
Emergency travel assistance We'll even keep in contact with family and friends if you can't.

Because I travel between the North and South Island, its a good thing to have just in case I need it.

They would have introduced that to compete with states system, as I am sure they lost a lot of customers to states system. States system is only about $20 a year with 2 free call outs a year. People who breakdown more pay more, but that is fair, as why should peple with new reliable cars subsidise users with old bombs. If I had an old bomb that beaks down alot, I would probably consider aa

622182 2007-12-19 03:28:00 In mostly metropolitan areas on the US . . the "free" tow is a 5 mile radius from the dispatcher's office . . . in the case where I worked, it was about 6 blocks North of Disneyland .

Commonly, most club members thought they were entitled to 5 miles free towing, when in many cases they were already at or near the edge of the 5 mile radius from the shop . . so if they went further out away from the epicenter, they were OT in a matter of feet or maybe a 1/4 mile and COD charges applied . . which they had to pay to the driver and seek remuneration if they thought they could from the club . It usually didn't work that way for them .

Here in the sticks, there is a different plan and there can be times when a 100 mile tow is free . . . but it varies on the day of the week, time of day and area of the breakdown .

My wife carries towing and breakdown insurance for herself . . I cannot get any coverage as I was once an employee of AAA . . . so she's the only one in the family with coverage .

Here's a good point: If you are sitting in an airliner and they cannot get the engines started . . . technically . . . TECHNICALLY! you can use the card to seek service for the aircraft . It won't work, of course . . but it is in the rules .

If a member is stranded by private or public transportation, they can call the club for assistance .

If a member is in another . . . uncovered person's car, they can call the club and get towed by the valid card-carrying member's card as they are therefor stranded and pay for insurance against that happenstance .

The card carrier is the insured in these cases . . . not necessarily the vehicle .

Of course, this is US club rules and likely won't apply to youse guys .

622183 2007-12-19 18:59:00 Been a member for 54 years, can't remember the number of call-outs, those older type cars were a bloody pain in the butt, 6volt batt. petrol pumps fan belts.

Those older cars would reduce the no of boy racers down here.

City Council starting to show somw balls.

Remember the Milk Bar Cowboys, the CMT boys sorted them out, perhaps a few heavy tanks rolling over the cars might sort them out.

Perhaps not! wifey has still got money in Provincial Finance.

Lurking.

. Do you know what the reasoning for this might be? Seems strange - discriminatory even . . .

Perhaps it's because they think you would know all the 'tricks' that would enable you to rip them off . . .

Or perhaps they think that, being an ex-employee, you should be able to fix anything yourself - which you probably can!
