Maybe it should be called Stadium New Zealand, considering it will be Tax payer invested and owned.

622411 2007-12-19 00:14:00 Who cares what they call it. They will never fill it with punters after the world cup, they can't fill it now. Just a case of the government using taxpayers money without asking. They keep forgetting we are the boss, they are only the workers. :2cents: intel hunter (6666)

Thats why our natoinal stadium shouldn't be in Auckland. Although Auckland has the population to fill it, they don't support sport as much as Wellington or down south. If it was built more central in the country such as Wellington, I am sure they would fill it. Wellingtons nearly 40000 seat stadium is often full for the major games, such as NZ vs Oz in rugby, yet our population is small compared to Aucklands. Wellingtons stadium should have been build as a 50-60 k stadium, as was always going to be too small, and we wouldn't have the problem we have now, with the governemtn pumping our taxpayer money into an old dog. I think Aucklanders should be paying for the stadium too, as Wellington rate payers paid for our stadium without any central governemnt money.

622413 2007-12-19 10:29:00 Where a facility or service falls into the nice to have but not essential, then I believe it should be user pays - and by user I don't see the taxpayer falling into this category.
All the players and managers get paid megabucks, so why should their livelihood be subsidised by the tax payer. If some company wants naming rights let them front up with the cost of improvements, after all it would be a tax deductible expense.
Politicians promising the people's money are merely grandstanding at the taxpayers expense.
If the government has taxpayers funds to spare, it should either be given back to the people as a tax rebate, or spent in some essential chronically under funded area like health or education.
