622086 2007-12-18 02:16:00 Paraquat not sure of the spelling, use to be availible years ago. Really powerful stuff. When you bought it you had to put your name and address etc into a poisons book.
:)

paraquat is manufactured by Syngenta but I doubt if you could buy it over the counter unless you are a registered user. In any event although it is a quick acting and powerful herbicide one of its virtues(glyphosate) is that it deactivates on contact with soil so will not meet SKT 174 requirements

Apologies: should read (like glyphosate) it deactivates on contact etc etc

Trade name is Gramoxone

622090 2007-12-18 07:46:00 Paraquat

From, wikipedia:

In acute toxicity studies using laboratory animals, paraquat has been shown to be highly toxic by the inhalation route and has been placed in Toxicity Category I (the highest of four levels) for acute inhalation effects. However, the EPA has determined that particles used in agricultural practices (400 to 800 μm) are well beyond the respirable range and therefore inhalation toxicity is not a toxicological endpoint of concern. Paraquat is toxic (Category II) by the oral route and moderately toxic (Category III) by the dermal route. Paraquat will cause moderate to severe eye irritation and minimal dermal irritation, and has been placed in Toxicity Categories II and IV (slightly toxic) for these effects.

Even a single swig immediately spat out can cause death from fibrous tissue developing in the lungs leading to asphyxiation

622091 2007-12-18 09:22:00 You can't buy it over the counter anymore. As I said in my first post, when you could you had to sign the poisons book. I think Yates use to market it under the name Paraquat.

622092 2007-12-18 09:29:00 Alcohol. Get some vodka from your secret stash, dilute it in some water, and spray. Alcohol draws the moisture out of the plants and will soon kill them.

You'll find it hard to keep them permanently away, though, as most weeds will just grow straight back up if their roots are intact. And as with the season, the flying seeds will easily find their way everywhere in your yard.

622093 2007-12-18 09:40:00 I'm not too sure if Paraquat is available anymore, somehow I don't think so. It's bad,bad stuff. Glyphosate (Roundup) is a much better & safer product.
We used to sprinkle Sodium Chlorate on ragwort plants, years ago. In the days before Tordon 50D.
I remember my grandfather telling me they used to somehow use it as an explosive to split logs in the old bush clearing days. I recall the last lot we bought (in a 20 litre drum) had a flash inhibitor in it; which was a good idea as there used to be the occasional nasty accident with it. I never finished that drum, handed it over to the Regional Council in one of their hazardous substances pickups.

622094 2007-12-19 05:51:00 There's always Agent Orange..I imagine you can still find drums of it near the DMZ in Korea. SurferJoe46 (51)
622095 2008-10-13 08:00:00 a few years ago Yates had a product called "Yates universal weed killer"
it was bloody good at killing most green things - it was mainly sodium chlorate but im guessing that because of the "tea towel" brigade it has been pulled from the shelves (we used it also to blow stumps - with a few other ingredients) but if you mixed it 50/50 with sugar put it in a slight containment field and then provoked it it would defoliate quite a large circle of paddock! ah the good old days
