779868 2009-06-05 10:48:00 um....thanks heaps guys. :)

new question here:

what is the difference between the Asus P5K-PRO and the Asus P5Q-PRO??

As far as I can tell, the P5K only supports up to 8GB or RAM and the P5Q can support up to 16GB.....and yet the price difference is around $100!!

once again thnks for the time guys :)

779869 2009-06-05 11:01:00 P35 has PCI-E 1.0 but P45 has PCI-E 2.0.
P35 has 6 SATA ports, and P45 has 8

www.tomshardware.com

Performance wise, there's no difference, both are mid range, but the P5Q offers PCIE 2.0 which isn't useful now but may be soon. It is superior to the P35 chipset in every way but if price is a problem then go for the P43 for the value. P45 also impletements proper crossfire..

779870 2009-06-05 11:01:00 P5K is based on the P35 chipset, and the P45 the P45.

I wouldn't mind the differences between the two chipsets, really. I have the P35-based P5K and it's an excellent board - unless you want to overclock a voltage hungry CPU.

779872 2009-06-05 11:36:00 ummm...thnks pctek, i am on a tight budget but i do have a fetish for dual graphic cards (i can only afford 1 card now but i am sure i will get another identical one later). So it seems to me that the P5Q supports the crossfireX at a greater speed......that gives me something to think about...um.....
what about that XFX 680i LT Sli mobo listed here:

www.trademe.co.nz

it is a second hand mobo but i quote "Both PCI Express x16 slots run at full x16 speeds all the time, so you can run Quad SLI on this board."
(from www.tweaktown.com _good_motherboard/index4.html)

i have no idea what that means compare to the P5Q when it comes to dual graphic carding...but it seems to me that this mobo can support dual graphic cards at a higher data transfer rate, am I correct?

thnks for your time guys. keep it up! :)

779873 2009-06-05 22:25:00 Why buy from Trademe? You may have after sales service issue later on. bk T (215)
779874 2009-06-05 23:39:00 Umm..true that..after sales service could be an issue, but if I buy a mobo which is still under warranty, won't the manufacturer cover it? powerover (12121)
779875 2009-06-06 00:52:00 I would prefer to buy stuff from a 'physical' shop and pay for what you get. And should there be any problem, you know where to go to. For new item, I don't think they are any more expensive than Trademe, if you shop around.

As far as possible, I'll steer away from Trademe, just too many 'unhappy customers' examples, if you care enough to ask around. Consider the time and hassle you have to spend should there be any complications.

779876 2009-06-06 01:01:00 Give you an example ..... for the build in my sig (most parts bought from iFocus & Ascent). When the parts arrived, I carefully put it together and then tried first boot. No fans, no light on mobo - nothing. Called iFocus (after hours too), and they arranged a tech to talk me through a couple of tests. Didn't take long to work out it was the mobo (DOA). They immediately dispatched another which arrived 3 days later - and I returned the first board. After that, away laughing.

For the sake of peace of mind - because things can and do go wrong - go with a good supplier (CL, Ascent, iFocus to name a few).

Also - you say your budget is $200. Save for an extra couple of weeks. it's worth it in the long run. For an extra ~ $60 you can get yourself the P5Q Pro which IS a good mid-level board.

779877 2009-06-06 01:07:00 Oh Geess you guys are soooo right. i was blinded by the cheapness and almost forgot about my own painful experience with trademe.....I shall save a couple of weeks and go for the P5Q then....

thnks so much guys..cheers
