623835 2007-12-23 05:24:00 The news tonight, alot of charities are saying lower levels of donations then last year.

One even mentioned internet shopping being a factor for this.

Wouldnt it be more of increased taxes, less money to spend, alot more people actually work over xmas (myself included) and people are kinda over the whole xmas thing these days?

623836 2007-12-23 06:58:00 They say the same thing each and every year to try and drum up more donations. CliveM (6007)

I would say it is more to do with the increased cost of living, higher interest rates, inflation on food and electricity. Really a lot of people are struggling at the moment, and the people who often donate, are those who are actually not in a position to donate.

I think people are over xmas. I noticed very few people in the shops this year, and most people who I have spoken to say they could give xmas a miss. It is more about relaxing and spending time with family, than big spending and presents.

623838 2007-12-23 10:20:00 There was a report many years ago that for every dollar (of donation) collected, only 20 cents actually reached its final destination - 80 cents evaporated along the line. After reading that report, I never donated 1 cent since then. Why should I donate money to those who go out collecting money like a beggar?

Remembered, far back in 1988, the Telethon collected about $6 m and the TV media charged about $3m for the coverage? We are actually helping the 'middleman' more than those needed.

Apparently saturday was the biggest shopping day on record with 100 transactions per second.

Theoretically inflation itself should not erode the standard of living. However the high interest rates of recent and a housing decline imo will definitely dampen the holiday spending spew of this year.

623840 2007-12-23 17:14:00 As a Xmas non-participant myself and not swept up into a buying frenzy goaded on by merchants and sales and credit card companies . . . . . I can see a lot of unhappy people all over the place . I sere a lot of frenzy . . . but not a lot of happy .

On the highways here in SoCal . . there's just a plain criminal mental attitude that says "me first, and you can die if you get in my way" from drivers of all sorts of vehicles . There's a very obvious moral collapse happening with more rapidity that ever before . Just wait until it gets bad!

I see that acts of kindness happen with less and less regularity . . . all at the same time buying gifts and presents for loved ones . . . . whoever they may be .

If there's no real happiness, then it is behooving to ask "where'd it all go"?

People are holding their funds close to the vest now . . . there's a lot of uncertainty as to what tomorrow may bring . . . and it's all rather like their chickens are coming home after years of neglect and finally demanding an accounting .

No . . . lower donations are just a tip of the iceberg . . . although with graft and corruption of "middle-men" taking their cut from the funds aside . . . people are just fed up with helping others when their own survival is so shaky . It ain't the internet . . . it's just people trying to survive .

Looks like everyone's balloon has popped or is about to and there's dread and gloom in their eyes . Donating to charities is very low on their list .

Wait till JB tells the nation (after Xmas, of course!) that we are in a full-blown recession . . . or make that a depression . The US is gonna buy back all the Federal Reserve notes payed to France and other Euro countries to replace that paper with gold . . as per original agreement . . . then you'll see the US banks implode and gold will go thru the roof .

Gold (at closing) is $812 . 40; silver at $14 . 47; platinum at $1527 . 00 (all USD) . . . and the USD against the Euro (€) = $810 . 50 : €563 . 43 . The GVP (£) is holding pretty good though at £408 . 70 .

I see oil took a neat little hike +2 . 54 to $93 . 60

Here's a webpage HTML code to get the latest . I run mine as a streaming runner under my clock on XP . This is however the Australian dollar .

623841 2007-12-23 17:43:00 what happened with looto I thought that was the whole reason why looto came out in NZ, what a fraud system you dont win anything and charities dont get any money. I wonder when the money goes? (I wonder if they pay any ACC fees like motorist do)

A few months ago I gave up on looto I sink some money into bonus bonds every three months, at least you can get your money back if you dont win well even if you do win.

Blame SWMBO for that . Hurricane Katrina ripping through New Orleans pales into insignifigance compared to my good lady .
