623526 2007-12-22 07:06:00 For what it is - I take it or leave it - It has a Asus Modified Xandros OS in it,
The Operating System is a custom Asus effort, built on the back of a Xandros Installation of Linux that may be not every ones Cup of tea so to speak. The Latest Aust PC Authority has a full review on it as well.
I'm just waiting for the day my son comes home from school with the stationary list and theres something like this included.

623527 2007-12-22 07:38:00 See Chill's thread for more info, however I have bought one, and am thoroughly enjoying it. The custom Xandros install is brilliant - very fast (boots in about 12 secs), does everything I need it to do, and abstracts away enough of the complex parts of Linux to make it friendly enough for a "normal" computer user. The thing which sold it for me was its size - it's seriously compact, and yet is large enough to be usable. I'd suggest you go and try one in a DSE store, and see what you think - spend 5-10mins playing with it, so you can really get a feel for what it's like.

It isn't intended for anything beyond web browsing, email, MSN/Skype, word processing etc. Don't expect it to run any modern games, do processor-intensive graphics work or anything like that. If you want something more powerful, then you will need to spend 4-5x the amount on an ultraportable laptop.

I bought mine while overseas while on a business trip, so saved a lot of money on it (cost me NZ$440, compared to the $600 which DSE sells it for).

623528 2007-12-23 12:07:00 See this months PC Authority for a great in depth review of it.

From what i have heard the stock model is very good... and if linux is not your thing you can put XP (or even Vista on it). Some people have even managed to add bluetooth/touchscreens etc to it.

However, i don't think the price is yet a sweetspot. Even in NZ you can get $800 laptops which have higher specs... so unless you are going for the ultra portability of the eee i would keep the other slightly more expensive options in mind.

623529 2007-12-25 02:44:00 I bought one from DSE for $599 which came with a built in 4GB flash drive. (There's a 16GB model coming out next year) and 512mb DDR2 RAM (upgradeable to 2GB).

The default Xandros OS is nice however I'm running XP at the moment. If you do plan on installing XP I'd recommend using nLite and slimming it right down.
