| 623612 | 2007-12-22 04:21:00 | Hi Guys, my car won't idle, it started playing up a couple of days a ago, where it kept dying after I started, but then it came right. Then yesterday it started car stalling at intersections, now it stalls every time I slow down to an idle. I'm no car mechanic, but was wondering if I could some how fix this myself? Failing that I will take it to a garage, but just thought it was worth a try asking you all first. If it helps I have a 1992 Mitsubishi Galant Auto Thanks guys Radium |

| 623615 | 2007-12-22 04:54:00 | AS vinref mentioned, check the simple things. Battery leads clean and tight, check other electrical connections in the engine bay. If it is caburetted any shop can check/clean that, if fuel injected a Mitsubishi dealer should be able to plug in some diagnostic gear (check with them first if your model has a diagnostic port - and that they have the right gear to check it). Mitsubishi automatics can be a bit fickle with their electronics playing up, although that usually affects the way they change gear. But that can manifest itself as poor running sometimes. Otherwise, if you have a mate with a compression gauge that will fit your plug holes, make sure they are even and good. For an engine to run it needs 3 basics - compression, spark and fuel, (at the right time/amount). |

If it helps I have a 1992 Mitsubishi Galant Auto Thanks guys Radium First is this.....fuel injected engines DO NOT STALL....unless there's something radically wrong. The TPS or ISC or MAF or BARO or might be the CPS might be a problem. Check this......is the CEL lit up on the dash? That's a Check Engine Light. If it's on, get the CPU on a bi-directional scanner. The light MUST go on when you first start the engine and go out in just a few seconds. Anything else is just wrong. Don't bother with the plug wires, fuel filters or whatever until you diagnose the problem. It is a good idea to run a fuel pump capacity test...all systems are test-able. Test flow and volume. My Snap-On FI tester has adapters for Mitsubishi FI systems..so don't let anyone say they cannot test it. Run the Bi-directional scanner...check for and repair the codes that are hard set...then the soft ones, although the soft codes may self-repair when the hard codes are fixed. Don't go out and just start buying parts and tossing them into the car..find out what's wrong and then get it fixed. BTW: there's no such thing as a tune-up any more...if someone suggests one, they are just trying to empty your cash reserves. |

Man that all sounds to complex for me, :horrified I just went out and looked at it, I started it and it's going fine ?? Maybe I will just take it to my mechanic next time it happens, whatever it is it seems to be an Intermittent fault . I did have a problem about 5 months ago, where the car would turn over but wouldn't start, I ended up towing it to my mechanic to look at, I went to pick it up and he hadnt looked at it, he tried to start it and it started straight away, I asked him what the problem was, he said he didn't know, because it wasn't doing it, anyway he offered a tune up :) I said how much . . . he said $200, I said nah don't worry bout it . I wasn't prepared to pay him to do a tune up when that may not have even fixed the problem . It happened once again about a week after, but tried starting it the next day and it started sweet as . So this time I didn't worry about it . Then about a month ago I replaced the battery, because the last one was on its way out, it would die If I had the stereo on for like a min with out it running The car has been going fine until the last couple of day where I have had this stalling problem . I'm wondering it the two problems are related because it has a much better battery now so that's why it's starting but won't stay running . But as I said it seems to be fine right now? |

| 623620 | 2007-12-22 05:39:00 | Sounds like it would be a good idea to take it to somebody with a bit more nous, and a scanner, before it dies :horrified Just wishing wont make it so! |

| 623621 | 2007-12-22 05:46:00 | Would you recommend a Specialist Mitsubishi Mechanic, over my local mechanic, Just I'm not sure as the Specialist place seems to be a bit of a rip off here, but I don't want to take my car to my mechanic and he doesn't have all the testing gear? I don't know it he does or not. | radium (8645) | ||
