623432 2007-12-21 19:00:00 Now that I have my new device up & running.
(Previous post pressf1.pcworld.co.nz)

I'd like to take it to another level.

What would be a good site to download movies from, safely?

623433 2007-12-21 19:38:00 please define safely and legal.
Don't ask for torrent links etc, to illegal download sites on Press F1 please.

I certainly had no intention of implying doing anything illegal; it just did not enter my thoughts.
I have not even considered downloading movies, until now, and don't really know much about it, except, from what I've cursorily noticed, that there are some dodgy aspects to it.
Hence, I left my question pretty open, trusting the people on this forum to give me reasonable responses.
If the question is too sensitive, I won't be particularly concerned if you delete it.

623436 2007-12-21 21:44:00 Downloading movies illegally these days IMHO is a waste of bandwidth because the turn around from cinema to DVD has closed up quite a bit and p2p releases aren't as impressive as they used to be. I know part of the reason why people look to downloading movies illegally is to save $20 or whatever, but I'd say the main reason they'd want to is just because they can. Besides, most people know someone that can hook them up anyways to save the "heavy lifting".

On the legal side of things, the Internet Archive (www.archive.org) stocks thousands of movies for free download. There's 10 min long amateur fare (much like YouTube (nz.youtube.com/)) in other categories but there's also a feature films section which I noticed in the recent additions (http:) was listed The Fast and the Furious (www.archive.org) (heh). Granted these are aren't late-model block busters but what can you expect.

For a bit of BitTorrent action you can download some of the popular movies (www.publicdomaintorrents.com) being shared at Public Domain Torrents (www.publicdomaintorrents.com/). The second part of the Steal This Film (http:) documentary is also expected this month.

Lastly, theres tons of high quality video content at DivX's website Stage6 (www.stage6.com/). It's all standard divx content, so you'll need to install the DivX Web Player (http:) browser plugin to play it in your browser (similar to Flash Player playing back YouTube content, etc) but you can skip that and just download directly if you're not interested in at least previewing. There are other sites too that sort the Stage6 videos into more convenient categories like joox.net (http://joox.net/).
