780853 2009-06-09 08:23:00 Hi

I have just installed Windows 7 RC on my Asus Eee Box PC (Atom N270 CPU; 1GB DDR2-800 RAM; 140GB 4300rpm HDD) - this is essentially a netbook performance level PC in a (very) small form factor desktop PC.

Had the idea of using it in the lounge to stream ripped DVDs from my main media centre PC downstairs via a wired ethernet connection.

Windows 7 itself runs okay but media centre is sluggish to say the least and any streamed DVDs (from downstairs Media Centre PC) are constantly stuttering and droppping frames, etc.

When I initially conceived of this project I envisaged upgrading the hard drive to a 16MB cache/7200rpm one and the RAM to 2GB.

In your guys opinion will these 2 upgrades be enough to overcome current performance issues?

Do I need to do both upgrades (harddrive & RAM) or would just upgrading the RAM be sufficient?

Cheers

780854 2009-06-09 08:28:00 I would wait for the final to come out, since you'll have to start all over again. If you decide to buy it Speedy Gonzales (78)
780855 2009-06-09 08:35:00 Have you tried using something like VLC then increasing the cache size?

Happened to me once, and this fixed it

780856 2009-06-09 08:41:00 I want to stick with media centre if at all possible so I'm really seeking advice about improving that aspect via hardware upgrades and/or software tweaks.

Cheers

780857 2009-06-09 08:42:00 Can you please test with VLC first please?

My opinion here is that the machine is powerful enough but stutters because of network issues.

780858 2009-06-09 08:52:00 Network issues may well account for the stuttering in the streamed DVD but not the very sluggish menu naviagtion and file viewing/selection performance within Windows 7 Media Centre itself.

Other users are reporting similar issues with W7 Media Centre too but no definitive solutions posted (that I can find anyway ...).

Not interested in VLC at all sorry - have found it really painful to use in the past to stream media.

780859 2009-06-09 09:01:00 Ah ok, I'm not sure if that 1.6ghz Atom is up to it but you can try upgrading the RAM.

Don't bother with the hard drive, its unlikely that thats the problem.
