623999 2007-12-24 09:54:00 well imo getting a detector because you can't keep under the limit, while understandable, is rather than covering your incompetence is just an excuse to keep doing it - and cops will generally let you off if you're not doing more than 10k over the limit as they are reasonable and do realise that people won't hover below the limit and that speedometers can be innaccurate (and as such the number of people contesting a 5kph infringement makes it a waste of time as both a revenue scheme and a PR campaign)

but still,
the vast, vast majority of radar detector purchases will ultimately be to avoid the police for whatever reason. while it is a good reason to, whether or not that justifies banning them is arguable

(and whether or not metla has jesus as his avatar has nothing to do with the validity of his post - that avatar is actually the result of spoof thread a few months ago which you may have missed)

624000 2007-12-24 10:13:00 Legod - you are an idiot. Why is it you think that "The only reason for having one is if you like to break the speed limit but don't like to get caught?". I break the limit at least 2x per week - unintentionally. How many of us drive at 54kph or 55kph etc in a 50 zone? Or at 84kph etc in an 80 zone? LOTS of us. We just do and we do not mean to. And I got one to stop me getting pinged for drifting over the limit without meaning to. I didn't buy it to speed at 80 in a 50 or 150 in a 100 zone - as you are obviously accusing 'us' of. I bought it as a warning for myself because I'm not perfect (like you obviously are), and sometime stray over the limit a little - and get fined for this. Please be careful before you tar us all with the same brush.

Yorkshire kid you're a complete moron. (Happy Xmas though anyway ;))
If you don't know how fast you're going then you clearly don't have the ability to drive at all. If you're doing 55k then you should KNOW you're doing 55k.
If you get caught then it's your fault. No-one else is to blame.
You are a classic example of the arrogant kiwi driver who thinks it's always someone else's fault for their inability to drive safely. And yes - there are LOTS of your type so I'm quite happy to tar alot of people with the same brush.
Besides - you won't get fined for straying over the limit a little. Only by a significant and noticable amount. If you're so concerned that you can't control your speed then try aiming for a few k under the limit (though good luck dealing with the impatient tailgaters).

624001 2007-12-24 10:30:00 In NZ 101kph is speeding yet when I was last in the UK the open road limit was 70mph (approx 112 kph). Yet another example of the nanny state we live in.

No don't ban radar detectors and no I don't own one. Freedom of choice.

The UK limit is 70mph on the motorway and dual carriageways. It's 60mph (slightly less than 100k) on roads equivalent to here. So the limit is effectively more generous here.
We have a few 'motorways' but given the number of people who don't understand following distances I think upping the speed limit would be a bad idea. Cruising speed is already 110-115k. Upping the limit to say 120k would see typical cruising speeds increase to 130k. I can hardly see drivers increasing their following distances to compensate. Those frequent, minor rear end collisions would very likely become more serious.

I don't care whether they ban radar detectors or not but I hardly see banning them as a restriction on freedom. They're only talking about banning them in vehicles. I'm sure you're quite free to use it in your own home (fat lot of use it would be but you'd still be quite free to do so).
What I see is far too many innocent people who have either ended up dead or have had their lives ruined forever all because of someone who was exercising their 'freedom'.
As far as I'm concerned 'nanny state' isn't doing enough nannying when it comes to road safety, driver education and enforcement. Something needs to be done to curb the idiots and the general incompetence on the roads. I hate nanny state but I bad drivers more.
Unfortunately, speed seems to be the only part of the equation that gets any attention at all. Driving isn't a natural skill and needs to be taught properly.

I read the newspaper I think and a company called Radars Direct or something said, it will just drive them undergound and he said most pple use it to keep them under speed and not to avoid the cops .

Not sure how true or if he is protecting his interests .

I think its a load of crap . Saying driving it underground is like saying, legalise drugs / party pills or you will drive those underground too . Maybe we should legalise murder :yuck:

Some good points there but I think you've twisted by 'freedom' statement. The freedom of choice to carry a radar detector does not extend to the freedom of choice to kill and maim others on the road. Despite all the hype, speeding is not the issue. As you have identified the bigger issue is one of education. That is something I noticed when driving in Australia - the drivers there seemed to be better educated in the theory of driving and the safety aspects (and more courteous).

It seems that any twit here can get a licence (to kill). As for these idiots who drive on the wrong side of the road because they are passing a parked vehicle - they obviously have a) no control over their vehicle and b) absolutely no idea where the left hand side of their car is on the road. These idiots and the red-light runners need to re-sit their licences or get banned. The penalties need to be tougher - increasingly longer waits to get your licence back post-infringements, and jail time for driving without a licence.

Anyhoo, given it is now past midnight have a good Xmas day! :)

On an auto car, take the foot off the accel so the brake lights won't even need to be on and the speed reduction is v gradual :D

If they tailgate me, I flip the rear view mirror up, my personality switches, I drop my speed down to 40 even down to 35 and around 25 near pedestrian crossing, to piss them off  What they gonna do smack into me, a 1992 1.3L car good luck. Makes me want to take akikdo lessons again and retake training in smallbore rifle :xmouth: Just bring it on ... Cuff them up and beat them up with a nightstick like speedo cops - ha.

Actually you are not Gods gift to mankind. I got a ticket recently and because of it had my speed o checked on a dyno and it was 14km/h over at 100km/h. Knowing that now I am very surprised that I have not had a hell of a lot more tickets.
