| 623969 | 2007-12-23 23:06:00 | oh, actually on topic here: i voted against banning them, but not because i own one - because i may intend to get one at some stage and would like the freedom to do so. if they ban them i'll just have to get a radar jammer:lol: stuffs up all the drivers on cell phones, sets off detectors, bad idea around aircraft, and generally causes havoc:D I rekon. Thats a plan. :p I live reasonably near where the 'accident' with the cop car and the bikers went down, theres absolutley no way the bikers were speeding. Minimal damage to the cop car, and they were both still alive! Doing that is the equlivant of driving into a wall at the same speed. I am so glad that charges were laid against the cop, and he bloody well better have learnt his lesson. If anyone, especially a cop, does that kind of manouvre on a road like that, he deserves to be hit and killed, idiot. |

| 623970 | 2007-12-23 23:09:00 | I agree with motorbyclist. Too many idiots on the road. Where I live, there is a street with 2, count 'em, 2, 90 degree turns. One sharp right, then one sharp left. But it's not that big a deal when you consider that it's a sleepy little street. The times I have walked down there, however, people hoon through at 50+ and the corner is somewhat blind. People put their cars more than 65% of their cars over the line! Why there aren't more crashes there, I don't know, but seriously, they should put a cop there and he'd bring home the fines all day, with an earful to boot. Damn, some people got their license out of a cereal box... Passing a license isn't hard if you're smart. The problem is that people get it, then ignore everything they learned and just wing it. A hard license test won't root out everyone with the wrong attitude to driving, will it? But putting one in place just means that the government is trying. Not much the government can do about peoples attitudes, aye? | ubergeek85 (131) | ||
| 623971 | 2007-12-23 23:17:00 | Anyone that has a Radar Detector fully intends to speed at some point or they would not have spent the money buying and installing one . Anyone who denies this fact is just kidding themselves . I bought my first RD 4 years ago when we drove from Seattle to LA . The reason - it had a warning device that "spoke" whenever we approached road works, danger areas or when an Emergency Vehicle was approaching, be it from the front or the rear . The thought of driving amongst 8 lanes of traffic in LA scared the jeepers out of me, but it was so reassuring to hear the RD voice say "Emergency Vehicle approaching from the rear", or "Left lane ahead is closed due to roadworks" . This same warning system is available here in NZ and Australia - the authorities and "powers-to-be" just elect not to activate it . :annoyed: I do not exceed the speed limit when I am driving . I set my speed to the allowable speed limit and use the car's cruise control features - flicking between the 'cancel' and 'resume' buttons on the steering wheel . My miles per gallon consumption is greatly increased :) I believe that the use/abuse by the Government of some pole mounted speed cameras (revenue gatherers) is criminal . The camera in Ngauranga Gorge being a prime example . It is mounted on the Southern DOWNHILL lane - everyone knows that a car going downhill will automatically pick up speed - for the Government to say that is is not just gathering revenue from this camera (the highest earning camera in the country) is BS   |

| 623972 | 2007-12-23 23:18:00 | I stopped for an orange light the other day only to be overtaken by a truck and trailer on the wrong side of the road. like a big truck? the sort that can't stop in a hurry? just checking you checked your mirror first before coming to a halt in what may be conceived by tailing traffic an unexpected fashion:thumbs: always amazes me the number of people who won't brake until the light is actually red:lol: (not you, the guys behind) and does anyone know those roads full of lights where if you do 50kph you get one green and the rest red, or if you hold 60-70 you get all the greens in succession? oh the frustration! pedestrians are at fault too - my dad nearly had an accident on a steep downhill where a girl on one side of the road called her dog on the other. of course the dog simply ran across the road and the car in the lead slammed it's brakes. the ute wasn't going to stop so (on the brakes) he swerved around the car. lucky the dog didn't get hit, much luckier there wasn't a huge nose to nail. if i was the lead car, considering the ute/heavy traffic behind and simply swerved, and if i hit the dog sent the girl the bill for a new bumper/headlight. seriously. then there's the ones who cross the road txting without looking (symonds st, 4 busy, fast moving lanes, directly above the symonds st underpass of course) - and the pedestrians who step out onto the road (not a crossing) and expect you to stop, then act all offended when you nearly hit them cause they didn't give you enough room to stop and you never even gave any indication of doing so:annoyed: (seriously, them standing for 2 seconds vs having a car emergency stop then start again for them - what would you do beyond having the brakes/swerve ready for such suicidal stupidity?) |

The camera in Ngauranga Gorge being a prime example. on the bike i have no number plate on the front... ltnz now has plenty of shots of a bike doing 64kph giving the one fingered salute:D you're right; it's ridiculous. people find learn where they are and slow down when within sight of it. going along the ellerslie-panmure highway everyone is doing 60 to 70 till the camera, slow to 50, and speed back up again |

He could have stopped - instead he chose to accelerate into the intersection. 100% dickhead. |

Never been a major accident there before or after they put that one in. Yep .. revenue gathering.. |

| 623977 | 2007-12-24 01:14:00 | That's a good Q. One would think so. I remember a while ago I was waiting for a bus when an unmarked cop car pulled up on the other side of the road, under a tree so the shade would hide the lights and stuff. Less than 30 seconds later, they measured someone who was speeding, and he was coming from the opposite direction (towards them). Boom! They're off, they catch them, and are back within 5 minutes to do it all over again. Since the radar gun measures the difference in distance over a certain period of time, and calculates the speed from the two (or more) readings it takes, it doesn't really matter what direction the object to be measured is traveling in, so long as the gun itself isn't moving (unless the gun also measures the speed that it is traveling at [either through GPS or being tied to the cars speedo] and factors that into the equation). Make sense? And anyway, not all crashes are the result of speed, take this one that just happened today: NZ Police CommCens Alert 13:00 24-12-2007 Canterbury Location of incident: Selwyn Incident Type: Fatal motor Accident At about 1045 hours today a 21 year old male was killed in a vehicle crash at the intersection of Ellesmere Junction Road and Days Road, Lincoln. The section of the road where the crash occurred is in 100 kph speed limit area. A tractor towing hay rakes was travelling east on Ellesmere Junction Road with a car following. The crash occurred when the car collided with the right turning tractor which overturned. At this stage speed is not suspected to be a contributing factor. The driver of the tractor died at the scene. The driver of the car was not injured. It is too early in the investigation to determine why this crash occurred. Constable Mike HARKER will be coordinating the crash investigation. The findings of the investigation will not be known for several weeks after all evidence is evaluated. The next of kin of the deceased have not been informed at this time but will hopefully be completed by late this afternoon. The road will be re -opened by about 1400 hours today. Stewart MUNRO Senior Sergeant Sub Area Commander Selwyn Police District CANTERBURY Issued By: Inspector Doug Parker Now that's just strange, it sounds like someone was distracted and didn't notice the tractor in front of them was turning. |

| 623978 | 2007-12-24 01:35:00 | by making it harder you'll just get more idiots on the road with no licence at all - and just because it's harder to get one doesn't make you a better driver If they made the punishment more appropriate then no, they would not drive without a license. Parts of Europe depending on the speed, your license as well as your vehicle can be confiscated for exceeding the speed limit let alone no license. i could go on all day, but suffice to say i've recently got a ticket for doing 120 on an empty stretch of motorway by a well hidden cop - and the very next day i was out riding with some learners, not anywhere near speeding, and bloody lost focus and subsequently crashed at 40kph! this is after months of "asking for it" and then going on a slow cruise i stuff up You deserve the ticket. The crash was just you being careless, sorry but it's a fact, you need to concentrate when driving at any speed. I have driven Road Trains, Trucks, Buses and cars in over 40 countries. So far I got arrested for parking in a no parking area in Bulgeria, fined for speeding in Spain driving a 1948 double decker bus, and a small accident with an Ox Cart in India, same bus. I have driven well over a million kilometers since I first for my license in '67. |
