2007-12-23 20:35:00 | Anyone that has a Radar Detector fully intends to speed at some point or they would not have spent the money buying and installing one. Anyone who denies this fact is just kidding themselves. NZ Drivers are getting more aggressive every year. Red lights are now only a suggestion to stop at an intersection. If you own a huge car or 4WD different laws seem to apply (or at least the drivers of those vehicles seem to think they are above the law). Stopping when the light changes Orange is likely to get you abused or tooted at. I do it anyway, it is quite amusing to see a fuming moron in the mirror. Driving at 50 Km/h in a 50Km/h area is similar, most would rather ignore it and do 60-80 instead. Once again it is quite amusing to do 50 Km/h and watch fuming drivers in the mirror. Ban Radar Detectors. It is time NZ toughed up on existing drivers and made licenses harder to get. Similar to getting a Drivers License in Germany.

2007-12-23 21:15:00 | Pal bought a GPS thingie whilst I was in England, said it told him where speed cameras and electrics directed at giving him a ticket. How effective I have no idea!

2007-12-23 21:38:00 | More info please... 30 Years ago when I worked over there it was know as the toughest place in the world to get a driving license. Why can't NZ be the toughest, surely the long term effects is that it is a safer driving environment for us and our kids. johcar I am sure if you search the net you will find out. I don't have details, sorry. In the UK they have a string of speed cameras (maybe 4-5 or more over a mile or so) in a lot of areas instead of a single one. They do average speeds through the distance between them. I am told by relations that it is quite effective in catching speedsters. There is a lot of warning signs prior to the cameras so anyone getting caught sure deserve it.

2007-12-23 22:16:00 | The reason why we have these speed limits & stop drunks on the road is to make it safer for all of us, it is about time that EVERYONE is made to respect the law and those who try and enforce it, banning the radar detector is just one small step. that was a case of drunken idiot, not speeding.... 30 Years ago when I worked over there it was know as the toughest place in the world to get a driving license. Why can't NZ be the toughest, surely the long term effects is that it is a safer driving environment for us and our kids. by making it harder you'll just get more idiots on the road with no licence at all - and just because it's harder to get one doesn't make you a better driver on thursday i nearly got taken off my bike by an idiot crossing lanes in a two lane roundabout without indicating nor looking - they were reading a map book while driving in rush hour traffic mid roundabout, while their passenger just sat there!(asain in a 4wd too) there is a fine with 25 demerit points for not keeping as practably close to the left hand edge of the road as possible - never seen nor heard of people getting this, despite all the idiots who hug or even straddle the centreline in the face of oncoming buses/trucks - but they're not speedin so it's safe? seems to the the approach of alot of the more useless drivers who i find to be causing alot of accidents and then there's the idiots with the speeding & stupid combo - one guy (4wd on thursday again lol) tore out of his driveway turning right at what must have been 50k right across me on his left and a truck on his right - at no point did he slow or even move his head to look either way - and once on the road he proceeded to floor it while adjusting his mirror. i later caught up to him tailgating a ute going around a blind corner, where the idiot had two wheels over the centreline! recently had a mate rear ended after he came around a blind corner to find a 4wd reversing up the road and the next vehicle behind rear ended him - and no-one wants to pay for it i could go on all day, but suffice to say i've recently got a ticket for doing 120 on an empty stretch of motorway by a well hidden cop - and the very next day i was out riding with some learners, not anywhere near speeding, and bloody lost focus and subsequently crashed at 40kph! this is after months of "asking for it" and then going on a slow cruise i stuff up so my time on the road thusfar has taught me that speeding (when conditions allow it) only serves to make some idiot's f***up worse rather than being a cause of an accident. obviously speeding outside a school or on an unfamiliar road/in heavy traffic is stupid, but straight roads with no traffic? if it wasn't for all the idiots out there with no inkling of what they're doing i suspect the accident rate would be a lot lower /rant but, of course, we all signed up to abide by the road rules so we can't ***** and whinge when we get done for breaking them, just i think too much is put into speeding when drinking and general 'not being able to drive/use mirrors/check blind spot/indicate/keep left/use common sense/tell a red light from green'. nowadays any accident where someone was speeding is seen by most to be the result of speeding - the fact that the driver was txting/asleep/would have crashed into the idiot parked on the inside of the blind corner anyway seems to escape people classic example was the biker cut in half recently - everyone was screaming about him speeding, ignoring the fact that had he hit the barrier at any speed above 80k he would have been killed and his bike broke under him causing the accident ok, actually /rant now i feel much better:p

2007-12-23 22:33:00 | oh, actually on topic here: i voted against banning them, but not because i own one - because i may intend to get one at some stage and would like the freedom to do so. if they ban them i'll just have to get a radar jammer:lol: stuffs up all the drivers on cell phones, sets off detectors, bad idea around aircraft, and generally causes havoc:D

2007-12-23 23:02:00 | In NZ 101kph is speeding yet when I was last in the UK the open road limit was 70mph (approx 112 kph). Yet another example of the nanny state we live in. No don't ban radar detectors and no I don't own one. Freedom of choice. In any case, the coppers should be reading the riot act to all the morons running red lights all over the city. Furthermore, the traffic planners need to go back to school to work out how to get traffic moving. If we didn't have lights every 100 metres, if the lights were phased correctly, and they gave either free left turns or left turn arrows, you may see a lesser frustration with the number of red lights and the temptation to run them. I also agree with the earlier comments of 4WD drivers and red lights - apparently both are to be looked upon with derision. I stopped for an orange light the other day only to be overtaken by a truck and trailer on the wrong side of the road. IMO morons like that truck driver need to be removed from the gene pool without taking anyone else with them.
