623198 2007-12-20 10:35:00 Today I tried to start my mower, it starts BUT the string/line thing that I pulled to start the mower didn't retract, so now the string/line thing is dangling around the handle.

Is it easy to fix by myself ? If not, is it going to cost a lot to fix? :dogeye:

623199 2007-12-20 11:13:00 For a starter, what brand of mower? What model? End of recoil spring broken of, maybe. :2cents: BobM (1138)
623200 2007-12-20 16:44:00 Most models of mowers have replacement parts for such situations .

If you haven't done one before or can't find someone with the experience, then you are in for a quick education .

It's do-able . . and fun once you have it done . If your self-punishment threshold is high, then it will be worth it .

There's some pre-winding of the coiled spring and then holding it while you load the pull rope into the spool . . . but with some good ol' mental gymnastics, it's easy the next time .

Thanks, I'll read and do more research before I attempt this.

623203 2007-12-20 22:37:00 It will probaly be the recoil starter spring broken.
If you are not mechanicaly inclined just undo the whole starer assy (3 bolts) and take the starter assy to a small engine shop.
It will cost about 20 slides.
Even if you are mechanically inclined rewinding the spring can be a pain in the ass. They can fly out and hit you in the head. (Never been the same since lol)

623205 2007-12-20 23:47:00 The B&S recoil springs can be nasty if they escape. A replacement one comes tied so it will fit in the housing. Do not untie it to see what it looks like. ;) Do that after it has been installed. Graham L (2)

I've had some intersting experiences with B&S recoil springs. I would highly recommend wearing some form of eye protecetion when working with it!

In saying that, last time it happened to me, it was a 25 minute job to fix. Not too complicated.

Get them to change the starter cord as well it would be a bummer if 2 pulls later it broke, you would have to go thru the same hoo ha agin.
