781186 2009-06-10 09:10:00 At work there is a network of various Vista and XP machines with access to a server (F drive). I need to hide one folder containing staff sensitive documents (or password protect it). Is there any easy way to achieve this? BigBadBob (14963)
781187 2009-06-10 09:13:00 Are you one of the IT staff?? If youre not,, then you probably cant do anything Speedy Gonzales (78)
781188 2009-06-10 09:17:00 If I remember correctly, you can hide it by putting the dollar sign ($) at the end of the share name.

In terms of password protection, you will just need to change the permissions on the folder so that only certain people can access it.

Right Click the folder>properties>permissions.

Make sure on Vista you have password protected sharing ON and set a user account etc

781190 2009-06-10 11:20:00 At work there is a network of various Vista and XP machines with access to a server Is it a real server or just a PC acting as a server ?

Real servers generally need to be logged into - if its running real server software, each folder can have the permissions set for each user - if they are not permitted to open a certain folder, while they can see it, it wont let them in or it can be set so only certain people have access.

PS: all the vista commands to take ownership wont do anything.
