781159 2009-06-10 08:05:00 Hey this is to do with my other post about a new pc. pressf1.co.nz
We currently have a license for Windows Xp Home on the current family pc and I was wondering is there a way to transfer the license to the new pc?

781160 2009-06-10 08:08:00 Not unless you format one and activate the other Speedy Gonzales (78)
781161 2009-06-10 08:11:00 will that work properly? nedkelly (9059)
781162 2009-06-10 08:18:00 Well thats the only way you can do it. Depends when you installed XP on the PC (that XP is on now). It may work, if its been 60-90 days. from today. But, if you install it on the other PC, you're not meant to install it (well you can install it, but activating it is another matter), on another later on. However, if XP was part of this PC (or on a recovery partition), then you cant put it on the other PC. Speedy Gonzales (78)
781163 2009-06-10 08:27:00 Just adding to speedy's comments - If the original PC is a name brand , the product key thats in the working system, (if its original) wont be able to be activated - MS will say its not a legal Key - What happens is the big OEMS - HP, Dell etc, use the same COA on many machines, theres a certificate in the PC that allows the key to show as legal - without it, MS wont accept it.

What they would say is use the COA thats stuck to the side of the case.

If it is an OEM copy of Windows XP with the sticker on the side of the case then legally you are not allowed to move it from one PC to another.
It stays with the PC it was sold with.

781165 2009-06-10 10:29:00 Quite correct CYaBRO.

I had a Motherboard fail with crook capacitors and when I replaced it all hell broke loose with messages about pirated software.

Anyway, I got hold of Microsoft, told them the story, and they advised me, because the Motherboard had failed, that was the end of my licenses!

Well, I gave the prick on the phone an earful, but he was unrepentant, so I got on the Internet and found a number of solutions which unfortunately we are not allowed to provide here. :(

Word of warning, turn your Windows Updates Off and never load WGA Windows Genuine (dis) Advantage.
