625175 2007-12-28 03:34:00 The Radio Reading Service reads newspapers, magazines and periodicals for those who can’t read (perhaps they are blind, partially blind, illiterate, can’t access the printed word or can’t hold a book or newspaper) and have been broadcasting from Levin for 20 years. Visit their website at radioreading.org to find out more about the station.

The station’s coverage is only around the Levin area, so their audience is small, but now you can listen online. Go to http://bart.freedomnet.co.nz:8000/ and click the blue “Listen.” There will be a small WinAmp download and you are away.

The station will be putting a streaming link on their site but I am not certain when that will happen.

Please tell all you friends, rellies and acquaintances about the Radio Reading Service. I’m certain that you know someone who would benefit from this service.

I would also be interested to hear your comments.

It sounds like a good service.

Presumably not available on videophones?

625179 2007-12-28 06:40:00 That is correct and they have been doing that for some years now and it is a good service but, of course, only one at a time.

But the Radio Reading Service is not just for the blind - it's for everybody who has difficulty reading for many reasons. But you don't have to have problems with your vision to listen. Have a listen yourself. Have a look at the programme guide on their site. You will be pleasantly surprised at some of the interesting programmes.

But, most important of all, please tell as many people as you can that the Radio Reading Service exists, so that more people are able to take advantage of this free service.

One of the many places that listen around the Levin area are people in rest homes and hospitals. Now it is possible for those types of people to listen all over our lovely country.

The people who keep The Radio Reading Service are mainly dedicated volunteers with three paid staff.

Worth listening to an hour or two.

625180 2007-12-28 06:49:00 On the contrary... Dell in United States has a toll-free hotline number for those who intend to buy their products but are hearing or speech impaired.

It does make you wonder how would that help...

Cheers :)
