624824 2007-12-27 04:26:00 End of year sales are well overrated.
Why panic buy? Alot of retail stores seem to have neverending 'sales' just about every week of the year. Briscoes spring to mind with their cheeky sales marketed to bring in the punters thinking they are getting a good deal when, in fact, a bit of hunting around would reveal they are just providing modest discounts off already overinflated goods.
The only time I would rush out to get something would be if I knew it was my last and only chance of picking up a particular item (eg. end of line stock or stuff for next year's xmas) that I have had my eye on for a while.

Briscoes & Rebel sport, who are both owned by the same company, I have found that the sticker price on a lot of the products they sell, is above the normal retail price that other stores sell the products for . Therefore they have lots of 'Sales' which only bring the price down to what you would normally pay for them elsewhere . This is why they regually have 25-30-50% sales . People have learnt this and don't buy from them unless they have a sale on, and I have found that these stores are often empty during their non sale days .
For instance, they used to regually offer 50% of the price of Whiltshire knives . They then stopped selling these knives, and the warehouse started selling them instead, and the warehouse normal price was half of the price that briscoes was selling them for at their normal price . eg . briscoes 50% sale price was the warehouses normal price .

In terms of sales, Harvey Norman/Norman Ross have some good sales on some of their electrical goods, although I think they have some loss leaders on sale, as some of their stuff is still expensive compared to other stores, even though it is on sale . . I don't really like buying from a foreign owned company, but I think their store format and selection is superior to NZ owned stores .

Maybe we should do what france do, and regulate sales to certain times of the year, and not sell loss leaders .

624827 2007-12-27 07:59:00 Current calendars and diaries are really cheap now too. R2x1 (4628)
624828 2007-12-27 08:53:00 Noel Lemming/Bond and Bond (same company again) , have 20% of most of their notebook range, and most TV's.

With tech stuff you never really get over 20% unless its going to be discontinued ... but 20% of a $3000 laptop is good money.

624829 2007-12-27 09:01:00 Just had an interesting conversation, Person who happens to know it all telling me (and I'm another person who knows it all ) about the $600 laptop they purchased today from Harvey Normans, and how it was perfect for everything apart from playing games.

Lmao.

I suggested they return it, and put the money towards a laptop that wasn't a piece of junk.

Funny enough, They just think I'm a ****** with no idea what I'm talking about.

Ah well. When they ask me to tweak it because it takes a week to boot and 24 minutes to open a folder I'm just going to suggest they get their money back and invest it in something that isn't a piece of junk.
